Hot Shooting Martin Methodist (Tenn.) Downs Dalton State


DALTON, Ga. – The Roadrunners played one of their most efficient games in program history, but hot shooting Martin Methodist (Tenn.) proved too much as the RedHawks defeated Dalton State 98-92 in non-conference basketball action at Bandy Gym on Tuesday evening.
 
THE FIRST HALF
  • A tight game (8-8 at the 15:35 mark) was opened up by the Roadrunners with an 8-2 run to snag a 16-10 lead with 12:57 left.
  • A three-ball from C.J. Perry with 10:36 on the clock gave the Birds an 8-point lead at 20-12.
  • What came next was a barrage of treys from the RedHawks as they hit two in a 10-0 run to take the lead.
  • MMC hit six more in total to conclude a 34-11 run to end the half and take a 46-31 lead into halftime.
 
THE SECOND HALF
  • Dalton State responded with an 11-2 spurt to begin the second half and cut the lead to six points, 48-42, just over three minutes in.
  • The teams traded baskets as the RedHawk lead stayed between 6 and 10 points for the next six minutes of play.
  • An Igor Stokic three with 9:35 on the clock cut the lead to four at 66-62.
  • The trio of Marquel Wiggins, Antares Gwyn, and C.J. Perry put the Roadrunners on their back down the stretch as they combined for the team's final 28 points.
  • Wiggins hit a layup with 20 ticks to cut the deficit to two, but two Adarion Hudson made free throws coupled by a missed three pointer from Perry allowed the RedHawks to take the victory, 98-92.
 
THE REST OF THE STORY
#18 Dalton State (Ga.) falls to (0-3 overall) with the loss, while Martin Methodist (Tenn.) improves to (7- overall, 3-1 MSC) with the win. Three Roadrunners scored in double-figures led my Marquel Wiggins with 36 points. Antares Gwyn had 21 and 8 boards, while C.J. Perry knocked down 5 triples and added 20 points.
 
Teddy Fifer led Martin Methodist with 28 points knocking down 8 threes. Four other RedHawks scored in double-figures with Darrin Jenkins adding 20 piints and Adarion Hudson contributing 18. Bailey Talley and Brady Brown each had 10 points in the win.
 
BY THE NUMBERS
The Roadrunners were a respectable 6-for-13 (46.2%) from distance, but the RedHawks were just lethal going 16-for-30 (53.3%). Overall, Dalton State held the edge in field goal percentage 61.7% (37-for-60) to 55.9% (33-for-59).
 
DS dominated points in the paint (48-28) and held the edge in rebounds (25-23), while MMC held the advantage in points of turnovers (10-6) and bench points (12-7). The Birds were better from the charity strip at 75% (12-of-16), while MMC hit at 72.7% (16-of-22).
 
UP NEXT
#18 Dalton State will be back in action on Thursday, December 17 when they matchup with Reinhardt (Ga.). Tipoff at Bandy Gym is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
