Roadrunners End The Fall Unbeaten After 1-1 Draw With Cumberlands (Ky.)


DALTON, Ga. – Dalton State hosted a tough opponent from the Mid-South Conference on Saturday at Lakeshore Park Soccer Complex and came away with a 1-1 draw to end the Fall unbeaten.                            
 
THE FIRST HALF
The Birds came out on the attack early but could not find the back of the net. The Patriots were the first to get on the scoreboard when a change in possession at midfield led to a surprise breakout from Cumberlands.
 
Milan Stojanovic sent a cross that found Alejandro Gonzalez in the middle of the pitch who knocked it past a diving Aaron Fraire and a 1-0 lead. DS has half a dozen opportunities to tie it up, but could not score as the score remined 1-0 at the break
 
THE SECOND HALF
The intensity level was high at the beginning of the second period. The Birds tried to get a score on the board, but the Patriots were rock solid in goal.
 
The breakthrough finally came in the 77' when a corner kick was batted around in front of the goal. A high bounce went through Patriots goalkeeper Nathan Hart's arms and hit the ground where Justin Riescher kicked it in to tie the match at 1-1.
 
Each team had their opportunities to win, but neither could convert as the match entered overtime tied 1-1.
 
OVERTIME
Cumberlands was first to attack in overtime. Two shots went wide before the Roadrunners got their shot. One shot went wide while Hart picked up another save. The Patriots got the last shot with Stojanovic sending another opportunity wide.
 
With the score still tied a second overtime period was needed. Once again Cumberlands go the first chance but missed. Three chances followed for the Roadrunners, with two more coming for the Patriots. Neither time a ball hit the back of the net as the match ended in a 1-1 tie.  

THE REST OF THE STORY
Dalton State goes to 3-0-1 with the draw, while Cumberlands (Ky.) goes to 0-2-1 with the tie. The Roadrunners held a distinct advantage in shots at 25-10 overall and 13-2 on frame.
 
Akililu Zambataro and Nathan Hart were both solid in net for the Patriots combining for 10 saves. Justin Riescher got his team leading 7th goal of the season to tie the match late in the second half.
 
UP NEXT
The Roadrunners are finished for the Fall. They will hit the pitch again on February 13, 2021 when they host Talladega (Ala.). Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
