Birds Get Sixth Straight; Move To 13-1 With Win Over Brewton-Parker (Ga.)


MOUNT VERNON, Ga. – #19 Dalton State won their sixth straight on Saturday, coming out with an 82-69 road win against Brewton-Parker (Ga.) in SSAC action in Mount Vernon on Saturday afternoon.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
THE FIRST HALF
  • It was a better start for the Roadrunners, yet the score remained tied at 8-8 five minutes into the game.
  • Back-to-back buckets from Jeffrey Hodges and Jeremiah Jordan saw the Barons pull ahead 13-10 less than three minutes later.
  • Both teams traded the lead over the next few minutes with the Roadrunners reeling off a 7-0 spurt to take a 17-13 advantage.
  • BP answered back and regained the lead, 19-17, at the midway point of the half.
  • The Barons quickly pushed the lead to six points, but DS battled back with an 18-3 run over a seven minute stretch that was capped by a Kevon Tucker bucket that gave the Roadrunners a nine-point lead at 37-28.
  • Trey's from each team ended scoring for the half and game the Birds a 40-31 lead at the half.
 
THE SECOND HALF
  • Timothy Green opened scoring in the second period with a bucket to push the lead into double-digits for the first time.
  • The Roadrunners kept the lead between nine and 11 points for the next six minutes of play.
  • Consecutive baskets from Tucker extended the Dalton State lead to 15 at 54-39 with 11:54 left in the game.
  • Seven-straight from Brewton-Parker cut the lead back to nine with 10:22 remaining, but the Roadrunners stabilized and matched the Barons point-for-point.
  • The lead stayed between nine and 13 until the 5:12 mark when Leondre Christie hit a shot from distance to trim the advantage to seven at 68-61.
  • DS answered the call and pulled the lead back out to double-digits where it stayed until 2:15 to go.
  • The Barons would mount one last charge and shrink the lead to six at 73-67 with 1:48 on the clock.
  • It was too little, too late though as BP ran out of gas and Dalton State hit their shots from the charity stripe to put the game away, 82-69.
 
THE REST OF THE STORY
#19 Dalton State (Ga.) improves to (13-1 overall, 3-1 SSAC) with the win, while Brewton-Parker (Ga.) falls to (4-8 overall, 1-3 SSAC) with the loss. Randy Bell led all scorers with 18 points and five rebounds.
 
Dauson Womack was next with 13 points and five boards, while Kevon Tucker poured in 12 points with seven rebounds. Aaron Burress and Sean Cranney each had 11 points, with Burress adding seven off the glass and Cranney completing a double-double with 10 dimes and five boards.
 
Three Barons scored in double-figures with Jack Gray leading the way with 16 points. Jeremiah Jordan added 12, while Leondre Christie capped his night with 11 points.
 
BY THE NUMBERS
Long distance shooting kept another opponent in the game as the Barons hit 13-of-29 (44.8%) from behind the arc. All together from the floor they could only muster 39.7% (23-for-58). In comparison, the Roadrunners were horrid from distance making only one of 17 attempts on the day, but made up for it by going 27-for-60 (45%) from the field and 27-for-30 (90%) from the free throw line.
 
Dalton State won the battle on the glass, 39-31, and turned 25 Brewton-Parker turnovers into 21 points, while committing just 13 turnovers of their own. The Barons did pace the Roadrunners in bench points, 30-24, but DS got them back in second chance points, 12-9.
 
UP NEXT
#19-ranked Dalton State will return to Mashburn Arena and open a three-game home stand on Thursday, January 9 against Blue Mountain (Miss.). Tip-Off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
