Birds See 20-Point Lead Evaporate, Hang On To Defeat Stillman (Ala.)

DALTON, Ga. – #6 Dalton State saw a 20-point second half lead evaporate, but held on for an 89-81 win over Stillman (Ala.) at Bandy Gymnasium in Dalton on Thursday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
THE FIRST HALF
  • Stillman was cold from the field early as Dalton State raced out to a 15-4 lead at the 13:51 mark.
  • The Tigers responded and cut the deficit to five (20-15) just past the midway point of the half.
  • A lay in from Tucker with 5:28 until halftime stretched the lead out to 12 points (33-21), but Stillman scored seven of the final nine points in the half to cut the Dalton State lead to seven (40-33) at the half.
THE SECOND HALF
  • The Roadrunners wasted no time putting their foot on the accelerator, starting the second half on a 20-6 run to build a 21 point lead (60-39), the largest of the night for Dalton State.
  • Steadily, the Tigers rallied behind the sharpshooting Bray who hit four-consecutive three's to cut the DS lead to 10 points (72-62) with 8:41 to play.
  • The lead got to as low as four on three occasions, the last with 1:34 remaining after another trey from Bray.
  • This time it was the Roadrunners who answered. On the next possession, and with the shot clock winding down Randy Bell pulled up from behind the arc and drained a three-ball of his own to make the lead seven (86-79) with one minute left.
  • A last ditch effort from the Tigers failed as miss from Trey Petty started a fast break for the Birds. C.J. Perry emphatically put the ball home for the last points of the game as #6 Dalton State escaped the upset bid, 89-81.
