Lady Roadrunners Fall In Conference Opener

DALTON, Ga. – The Dalton State Women's Soccer team opened Southern States Athletic Conference play on Saturday afternoon, but it wasn't the result they were looking for as cross-state rival Middle Georgia State defeated the Lady Roadrunners 3-0 at Lakeshore Park Soccer Complex in Dalton.

THE FIRST HALF
MGA went on the offensive early and it quickly paid off as Taylor Shields got the Lady Knights on the board first in the 4' for a 1-0 lead. Shots on goal were swapped in the middle portion of the first half with both Courtney Link of Middle Georgia and Mattie Dollar of Dalton State collecting saves.

In the 32' Hannah Theriault broke free from the Dalton State defense and received a ball from Maria Garcia. With one kick Theriault beat Dollar and extended the lead to two at 2-0. Theriault once again got a look at goal in the 38' but her shot traveled wide. The Lady Knights defense stifled the Lady Roadrunner attack throughout the first half as Middle Georgia took a 2-0 lead into the break.

THE SECOND HALF
DS came out of the half renewed with vigor and looked to get on the board. They controlled the first 25 minutes of the second period of play getting three solid shots on Link. One traveled high, while Link corralled two others to hold the Lady Birds scoreless.

The Lady Knights got their first shot off on Dollar in the second half in the 72' when Taylor Shields booted a knock at goal. Dollar came up with the save, but the rebound trickled right back to Shields. The Lady Knight winger got a cleat on the ball and kicked it right back to Dollar for the easy save.

A few minutes later, Shields found Miagh Downey alone in the middle of the field. Downey collected the ball and sent a screamer past Dollar's lower left for the third goal of the afternoon and a 3-0 lead. Dalton State pressed in the final minutes to get on the board. They got three good chances, but two went high and wide, while another was saved by Link as Middle Georgia held on for the shutout and a 3-0 win.
