(RV) Roadrunners Get Win Over Middle Georgia To Open SSAC Play

DALTON, Ga. – (RV) Dalton State opened Southern States Athletic Conference play with a win and in the process extended their unbeaten streak to nine matches with a 3-1 win over Middle Georgia State at Lakeshore Park Soccer Complex in Dalton on Saturday afternoon.

THE FIRST HALF
It was tough sledding for both squads early as defense was at a premium. The first shot from either team did not occur until the 11' when Santiago Moore sent a ball wide of the net. Staying on the offensive, the Roadrunners broke through first with a goal from Frank Herrera in the 16' on a ball that barely touched the deck. It began with a throw in from Kevin Villatoro that found Justin Riescher in front of the net. The header from Riescher found Herrera who did the rest.

The pace slowed temporarily as the sun beat down on the Lakeshore turf. MGA would get their first crack on goal in the 26' when Callum Bryan sent a ball at Aaron Fraire. Fraire scooped the save to protect the lead.

The Roadrunners turned the solid defense into offense, getting an opportunity to extend the lead. They found the nylon when a Moore free kick was headed to Riescher from Fredrik Ackander. Riescher too headed it, but his went past Knight goalkeeper Matt Wallace for a 2-0 lead.

With under eight minutes left in the first half Dalton State collected goal number three when Riescher found Taeylor Fisch who beat Wallace. As the first half ended, the Roadrunner defense kept the Knights in check and carried a 3-0 lead into the break.

THE SECOND HALF
The second period of play began much the same way as the first, with each team playing tough defense. Middle Georgia was the first to get a scoring chance when they sent three shots at Friare in a two minute stretch. Fraire collected the save on one with the other two going wide and high.

A turning point in the match occurred in the 60' when Richy Volny received a red card forcing the Roadrunners to play the final 29 minutes with 10 men. Playing with an extra man the Knights turned up the heat offensively.

MGA went on a nine-minute stretch where they outshot Dalton State 5-2 and finally got on the board. In the 72' Felix Gotthardt lined up a free kick after a fould on the Roadrunners. The shot headed toward Fraire and dove at the last minute, confusing the DS netminder. The ball took one short hop over Friare and into the net to make the score 3-1.

DS shut down the Knight attack following the goal going on an offensive stretch of their own to end the match where they outshot Middle Georgia 5-1 and held on for the 3-1 win.

THE REST OF THE STORY
Dalton State (Ga.) improves to (8-1-1, 1-0 SSAC) with the win, while Middle Georgia State falls to (5-5, 0-1 SSAC) with the loss. Sophomore Justin Riescher had a fabulous match with one goal and two assist on the day.

Riescher scored in the 27' and assisted on goals by Frank Herrera in the 16' and Taeylor Fisch in the 37'. Santiago Moore and Kevin Villatoro also collected assists, while Aaron Fraire made four stops in net and only allowed one goal.

Felix Gotthardt scored the only goal for Middle Georgia in the 72' off a free kick with Callum Bryan (2), Jesus Sanchez (1), and Alejo Bzuroski (1) getting shots on goal. Matt Wallace added six saves and allowed three goals.
