Roadrunners Fall In Season Opener To Tennessee Wesleyan

DALTON, Ga. – Dalton State kicked off the 2019 season on Tuesday evening, but it wasn't the start they hoped for as the Roadrunners dropped a 1-0 decision to Tennessee Wesleyan at Lakeshore Park Soccer Complex.

THE FIRST HALF
The Bulldogs attacked fast and tried to rattle freshman Aaron Fraire in his first start in net with a barrage of shots in the first 10 minutes of play. With the offensive push halted, the Roadrunners went on the attack.

Ricky Volny got a good look on goal in the 18th minute, but couldn't convert it into points. The miss put Tennessee Wesleyan back on the offensive with multiple chances. They too struggled to convert good looks.

A final opportunity for Dalton State in the half came from a Santiago Moore corner kick to Fredrik Ackander. Ackander's shot was solid, but Bulldog netminder Nick Croucher dove to his left to come up with the save. It preserved a 0-0 tie going into halftime.

THE SECOND HALF
DS got the first shot on goal in the second period as Amin Saheb Ettabaa's shot went high, but TWU struck first blood in the 48th minute as Nicholas Akoto sent a shot in the box that Nick Davis finished for a 1-0 Bulldog lead.

Tennessee Wesleyan tried to quickly add to the lead and held the momentum for the middle part of the second half, but Fraire was up to the task. As time wound down, the Roadrunners mounted a last attack as they took control at the end of the match.

It began with a Noah Thomas shot in the 74th minute and included shots by Justin Riescher (82nd minute), Jeremiah Ruth (86th minute), and Kevin Villatoro (85th and 86th minute). Neither found the back of the net. As the horn sounded, the Roadrunners had to settle for a 1-0 defeat to begin the season.

THE REST OF THE STORY
Dalton State falls to (0-1) on the season, while Tennessee Wesleyan improves to (1-1). The Bulldogs claimed the advantage in shots at 14-8 and shots on goal 7-4. The second half swung in the Roadrunners favor as the took a 10-2 first half deficit and turned it into a 6-4 second half advantage.

Freshman Aaron Fraire was solid in goal with six saves, while Kevin Villatoro (2), Noah Thomas, and Fredrik Ackander collected shots on goal.

Tennessee Wesleyan forward Nick Davis collected the only goal of the evening with an assist from Nicholas Akoto. Akoto and Davis, along with George Green (2), Montel McKenzie, Josh Conradie, and Ben Timms all had shots on goal, while Nick Croucher collected four saves in net.
