Roadrunners Score Huge Road Victory With Upset Of #24 Reinhardt

DALTON, Ga. – Dalton State picked up a huge early season win with a 1-0 victory over #24 Reinhardt (Ga.) in the first game of the RU Invitational at Ken White Field at University Stadium in Waleska on Thursday.

THE FIRST HALF
The first period was hard fought by both clubs with defense at a premium. Reinhardt took control early and nearly got on the board first with a Taylor Gray shot, but Aaron Fraire stoned him cold. Dalton State got their first crack when Amin Saheb Ettabaa got a clear shot on goal, but it traveled wide to keep the score tied at 0-0.

Both teams traded attempts in the middle part of the half with Eagles goalkeeper Niko Tzevelekos stopping shots by Richy Volny and Kevin Villatoro and Fredrik Ackander blocking another attempt by Gray. Opportunities continued to be at a premium with the Roadrunners and Eagles combining for two more shots in the final 12 minutes of the half.

Justin Riescher had a shot go wide in the 36' and Callum Lees had a shot go high with 53 ticks left of the clock. At the end of the half, the score remained tied at 0-0.

THE SECOND HALF
The Eagles attacked quick out of the break, taking the first shot on goal in under a minute of play. Fraire once again stopped. Dalton State began to attack shortly after, gaining the offensive momentum to match their defensive intensity.

Santiago Moore got the first chance, but his shot trailed wide. Next up was Noah Thomas, but Tzevelekos came up with the save. The Eagles got back on the attack in the 64' when Antonio Ciardiello got a look at goal, but his shot was high.

The breakthrough came in the 69' when Thomas found Frank Herrera who whistled a low screamer past Tzevelekos for the 1-0 lead. With confidence and the lead, the Roadrunner D buckled down not allowing another shot by the Eagles. As the buzzer sounded, Dalton State collected their first win of the season, 1-0.

THE REST OF THE STORY
Dalton State improves to (1-1), while #24 Reinhardt drops to (1-1). Frank Herrera picked up the only goal of the game, with Noah Thomas, Kevin Villatoro, and Ricky Volny picking up shots on goal. Taylor Gray and Aaron Whitten both had shots on goal for the Eagles.

The Roadrunners held the advantage in shots (8-5) and on goal (4-2). Aaron Fraire picked up two saves for his first collegiate clean sheet. Niko Tzevelekos was equally as good in goal with three saves and allowing just one goal.
