Roadrunners Come From Behind To Defeat #20 Bethel

DALTON, Ga. - Dalton State trailed by 20 points late in the first half, but turned up the intensity and stormed back to defeat #20 Bethel (Tenn.) 89-84 in overtime in SSAC action at Mashburn Arena on Thursday night.

THE FIRST HALF
The game started off close with neither team letting the other gain a lead more than four points. Bethel's Cayden Edmonson started the game with four points in the paint for a 4-0 lead for the Wildcats. The next sequence saw the Roadrunners out-score Bethel 6-2 to even the score at 6-6.

The score remained close with the Wildcats holding a 14-10 lead after two Edmonson free throws with 13:03 on the clock. Dalton State fought back and pulled ahead when Randy Bell slashed to the hole, finishing a layup and drawing a foul. He converted from the charity stripe as the Roadrunners took a 17-15 lead.

Bethel answered back with a 9-2 run to re-gain the lead, 24-19 with 8:38 left to play in the half. Sean Cranney hit a three to pull within two at 24-22, but it would be the last basket for the Roadrunners for over seven minutes as they went cold from the field. The icy streak allowed the Wildcats to go on an 18-0 run and pull the lead out to 20 points.

With under a minute to go, Coach Ireland called a timeout to get his club back on track. It proved to help as Dalton State did not lose its confidence and fought back to end the half with three buckets and close the gap. At the half, the score was 44-28 in Bethel's favor.

THE SECOND HALF
A rejuvenated Roadrunner came out of the half with fire and intensity. A 12-0 run over the first three and a half minutes that was capped by a Raheem England free throw shrank the lead to four at 44-40. Bethel stretched the lead back out to 10 at 52-42 after a Jarred Walker three-pointer with 13:58 left to play.

Dalton State would not go away as they matched Bethel shot-for-shot. A fast break bucket from Malik Pugh cut the lead to six at 68-62 with 7:17 remaining in the contest. Isaac Edmondson converted a free throw to make the score 69-62, but Dalton State came right back with four-straight to cut the lead to three at 69-66.

The Roadrunners tied the game at 69-69 after a pretty move from Sean Chislom in the paint that drew a foul on Wildcat big man Cayden Edmonson. The foul was especially big for Bethel as it was Edmonson's fifth. Chislom converted from the line to give Dalton State their first lead since the 10:40 mark of the first half, 71-70.

Bethel came back with a three-pointer from Bradley Walker to re-take the lead, 73-71. Dalton State got a basket back with a Pugh second chance put back, but the Wildcats found a way to pull out a four-point lead at 77-73 with 2:09 left to play.

With the ball, Bethel looked to run the time down. They did just that, but an Isaac Edmondson three hit the iron and kicked out long to Kingston Frazier. Frazier pushed down court and found Chislom who hit the layup to pull within two.

Another defensive stop from the Roadrunners gave them the ball with a chance to tie. Randy Bell got the ball on the wing and hit an off balance fade away to tie the game at 77-77 with 41 ticks on the clock. Bethel came back down and got a basket from Noah Chatman to get the lead back, 79-77. A timeout by Ireland was enough time to draw up the perfect play.

The Roadrunners got the ball down low to Chislom. He did the rest with a nifty reverse layup to tie it at 79-79. Bethel got the last opportunity, but Braxton Nappier's shot clanked off the iron. Chislom pulled down the board and ran out the clock as the game headed to overtime.

OVERTIME
Isaac Edmondson got a quick bucket to open overtime and give the Wildcats a two-point lead. Bell tied it back up at 81-81 when he picked Edmondson's pocket and threw down a jam. A defensive stop put the ball back in the Roadrunner's hands. Bell missed a three, but Chislom was there to clean up the mess and put it in for an 83-81 lead for Dalton State.

The Wildcats tied the game again after an Edmondson field goal, but another second chance put back, this time from Raheem England gave the Roadrunners the lead right back, 85-83. Bethel tried to make things interesting, but the Roadrunners would not be denied as Cranney closed it out from the charity stripe for an 89-84 win.
