Roadrunners Fall On The Road To MGA

COCHRAN, Ga. - Trailing by as many as 11 points late in the second half, the Roadrunners almost made the comeback but it came up just short as Middle Georgia State held on for a 75-71 win in SSAC action at Morris Gym in Cochran on Saturday evening.

THE FIRST HALF
It was a close game to begin with both teams trading buckets in the early going. A Sean Cranney layup with 15:48 to closed the Middle Georgia lead to one-point at 10-9, but the Knights came back with nine-straight to take a 19-9 lead.

A Tyrone Young three pointer with 13:15 left in the half extended the Knight lead to 11 at 22-11. A 9-2 stretch from the Roadrunners decreased the lead to four, 24-20. Dalton State kept fighting and with 4:26 remaining they cut the lead to one-point at 31-30 after a Kingston Frazier trey.

The Frazier bucket was followed by a Sean Chislom second-chance put back and a foul that sent him to the charity strip. He converted the and one to give Dalton State a two-point lead, 33-31, with 3:02 remaining in the half.

Dalton State attempted to add to the lead, but they missed their final five attempts from the field and turned the ball over two times after getting the lead. The final two buckets of the half were scored by the Knights on a Kinsey Burgess second chance opportunity and a Tyrone Young basket in the paint as Middle Georgia took a two-point lead into the half, 35-33.

THE SECOND HALF
Less than three minutes into the second half, the Roadrunners tied the score at 39-39 after Cranney found Aaron Burress in the paint for two. The Knights responded with eight consecutive points to take an eight-point lead.

The run continued as the Middle Georgia kept getting the ball into the paint. The lead grew to 12 points at 53-41 after an Antony Edwards bucket with 11:54 to play. Dalton State fought hard to come back, but the Knights still held an 11-point lead with 6:59 to play.

Gradually, the Roadrunners started to chip away. The lead was down to five at 67-62 after an Elijah Staley field goal with 4:23 left. A few minutes later it was two after a Malik Pugh basket with a foul. Pugh missed the chance to trim it to one, but Dalton State still have 1:17 on the clock.

The Knights turned the ball over on their next possession, but Dalton State could not capitalize as they turned it over as well. Forced to foul, the Roadrunners fouled Kevin Ford. He hit two from the free throw line to increase the lead to three points. Another miss forced a foul on Darrell White. His two shots put the lead at five points.

A late shot from distance from Randy Bell found its mark and cut the lead to two, but it was too late as Young broke the press with a long pass to Burgess who made the basket with one second on the clock to seal the 75-71 win for the Knights.
