#19 Roadrunners Get Win Number Ten


DALTON, Ga. – #19 Dalton State collected win number ten on Saturday with an 87-62 win over Carver (Ga.) in non-conference action at Bandy Gymnasium in Dalton.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
THE FIRST HALF
  • The game was tight in the early going with the Roadrunners clinging to a slim lead for the first seven minutes of play.
  • Carver tied the contest at 14-14 with a Julian Fuller three-pointer at the 12:23 mark.
  • The next five minutes belonged to Dalton State as they outscored Carver 11-4 to take a 25-18 lead.
  • A bucket by Antonio Gardner with 4:12 left in the half drew a foul that Gardner finished off at the line to cut the lead to four points at 31-27.
  • An 8-3 spurt from the Birds extended the lead to nine points, 39-30, going into the break.
 
THE SECOND HALF
  • Aaron Burress got the scoring started with a bucket in the paint to push the lead to double-digits.
  • A Chris Iverson three with 17:45 on the clock cut the lead to seven at 43-36, the smallest the deficit would get the rest of the game.
  • DS put their foot on the gas pedal for the next seven minutes and with 10:32 remaining in the game the Roadrunner lead stood at 59-42.
  • Kevon Tucker hit a trey with 8:04 left to stretch the lead out to 23 points at 69-46.
  • The Roadrunners put it on cruise control from there, eventually getting the lead to 27 points before settling for an 87-62 victory.
 
THE REST OF THE STORY
Dalton State (Ga.) improves to (10-1 overall, 1-1 SSAC) with the win, while Carver (Ga.) falls to (0-8 overall) with the loss. For the second game-in-a-row Kevon Tucker led all scorers with 20 points. He also chipped in with three rebounds and three steals.
 
Randy Bell was one rebound short of a double-double with 19 points and nine boards. Aaron Burress shot an 80% clip from the field, pouring in 18 points and pulling eight off the glass.
 
Carver had two players score in double-figures with Antonio Gardner leading with 16 points. Marquel Gibbons was next with 11 points.
 
BY THE NUMBERS
DS held the rebounding edge by 14 at 38-24. They also dominated the paint, outscoring the Cougars 56-24 and pushed the ball down court effectively to the tune of 24 fast break points.
 
The Roadrunners shot 51.5 % (34-of-66) from the field, while holding the Cougars to 42.6% (26-of-61). Carver gained the advantage in bench points, 15-14.

#19 Dalton State will break for Christmas and get back on the hardwood on Sunday, December 29 when they host (RV) Life (Ga.) at Mashburn Arena. Tip-Off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
