Roadrunners Open Sock Fancy Classic With 18-Point Win Over Morris (S.C.)


MARIETTA, Ga. – Five players scored in double-figures for the Roadrunners as Dalton State moved to 5-0 on the season with a 98-80 win over Morris (S.C.) in the first game of the Sock Fancy Classic at The Eagles' Nest in Marietta on Friday evening.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A fairly even start was broken open by the Roadrunners at the 14:38 mark of the first half with a Jordan Young bucket in the paint.
  • It keyed an 11-0 run that was capped by a Kevon Tucker basket with 11:35 remaining in the half.
  • A C.J. Perry trey with 7:20 left gave Dalton State a 13-point lead at 32-19.
  • The lead would grow to 15 at 36-21 before a 9-2 run from the Hornets cut the deficit to eight with 1:54 on the clock.
  • DS answered with a 7-2 spurt to close the half and go into the break up 13 (45-32).
  • Morris opened the second half outscoring Dalton State 11-7 to cut the Roadrunner advantage to single-digits at 52-43 with 15:02 left to play.
  • Dalton State once again answered, this time with three-straight treys from Perry and Tucker to go up 18 (61-43).
  • The Roadrunners continued to maintain the lead that went up to 20 points (77-57) after a Randy Bell lay in with 9:30 on the clock.
  • From there, Dalton State locked down on the defensive end and put it on cruise control stretching the lead out to 23 at one point before closing with a 98-80 win.
 
THE REST OF THE STORY
Dalton State (Ga.) improves to (5-0 overall) with the win, while Morris (S.C.) falls to (0-6 overall) with the loss. Junior C.J. Perry hit five triples to lead the Roadrunners with 26 points. Kevon Tucker and Randy Bell each had 19, with Bell adding five boards.
 
Rodley Adjei directed the offense and put up 12 points, five assists, and two rebounds, while Jordan Young collected another double-double with 14 points and 10 off the glass. Sophomore Igor Stokic got the start at forward and made his presence known with 10 rebounds.
 
Demetrius Knox led a trio of Hornets in double-digits with a game-high 28 points, four assists and three rebounds. Frederick Brown had 15 points, while Gerald Phillips added 11 points in the loss.
 
BY THE NUMBERS
The Roadrunners got the advantage on the glass, 43-29, while shooting 53.8% (35-of-65) from the field. On the defensive end, Dalton State held Morris to 44.6% (29-of-65) shooting and forced 19 turnovers. They took advantage on the offensive end to the tune of 26 points off turnovers.
 
Forty-four of the Roadrunners 98 points occurred in the paint, while they held the Hornets to 26. They also outscored Morris in the fast break 12-6 with second chance points breaking even at 11-11.

The Roadrunners will look to get win number six when they hit the hardwood again tomorrow, November 16 against Piedmont International (N.C.) on the second and final day of the Sock Fancy Classic on the campus of Life University in Marietta. Tip-Off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
