Roadrunners Come Close To Upset Of #1 William Carey


DALTON, Ga. - Penalty kicks were the difference as William Carey connected on three successful tries and held back a late Roadrunner attack in a 5-3 win in Southern States Athletic Conference action at Lakeshore Park Soccer Complex in Dalton on Saturday.

THE FIRST HALF
It would be the Roadrunners would would strike the first blow with a Jose Villalobos goal on an assist from Tyler Hudson in the 10'. The Crusaders would try to strike back fast as they pushed the ball up field looking for the equalizer. A foul in the box in the 11' on Dalton State would setup a penalty kick by Joaquin Ruiz Cabello. He would connect to tie the score at 1-1. Four minutes later, another foul in the box by Dalton State would setup another penalty kick for William Carey. Michale Conejero would find the back of the net for a 2-1 Crusader lead.

In the 23' Ethan Loftin would find Ben Whalley who would beat Samuel Fraire to put the Crusaders up 3-1. Whalley would find Pablo Varela Fraga in the 36' for another goal to extend the lead to 4-1. The Roadrunners would mount an attack in the closing minutes, but could not connect for a goal as the teams would go into the half with William Carey up 4-1.

THE SECOND HALF
The score would remain 4-1 with both teams attacking out of the half. Dalton State would cut into the lead in the 66' when Kevin Villatoro put home a cross from Sebastian Guzman to make the score 4-2. Conejero would connect on yet another penalty kick to put the lead back at three, but Sebastian Guzman would send a screamer over the outstretched hands of Carey goalkeeper Josh Carpenter to cut the lead back to two at 5-3.

The Roadrunners would stay on the attack the rest of the match, but could not find the back of the net. Time would run out on the upset bid as #1 William Carey would escape Dalton with a 5-3 win.

THE REST OF THE STORY
Dalton State falls to 4-4-1 overall (0-1 SSAC) with the loss, while #1 William Carey (Miss.) improves to 9-0 overall (2-0 SSAC) with the win. Jose Villalobos, Kevin Villatoro, and Sebastian Guzman each connected on goals with Guzman and Tyler Hudson assisting.

William Carey held the advantage in shots, 16-12 (14-7), but Dalton State got the notch in corner kicks, 11-3. Samuel Fraire would be stout in goal with nine saves, but had to face three penalty kick goals. Michael Conejero led Carey in scoring with two goals.

UP NEXT
Dalton State will be in action again on Monday, October 1 when they take on #3 Mobile (Ala.) in a match rescheduled from September 27. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
