Lady Birds Win Tough Season Opener Against Columbia (S.C.)

DALTON, Ga. –The Dalton State Women's Soccer team fought an aggressive match against Columbia College (S.C.), but held on to win their season opener 1-0 at Lakeshore Park Soccer Complex on Sunday afternoon.

THE FIRST HALF
Both teams played a tough first half with a combined 20 fouls and 7 shots taken. The Koalas would take the first two shots of the game, but the Roadrunner defense stayed strong enough throughout the half to keep them scoreless. Junior Andrea Lopez would miss on her first shot but scored later at the 22' on an assist from Jacqueline Tapia. The Lady Birds led going into the half 1-0.

THE SECOND HALF
Both teams came into the second half aggressively, with Columbia freshman Madeline Matusik and Dalton State Adriana Delgado each receiving a red card for fighting at the 38'. Junior Alyssa Bilbrey picked up a yellow card soon after at the 31. Both teams put up an impressive defense for the rest of the half, but it was the tough Lady Birds that would come away with the win.


THE REST OF THE STORY
Dalton State opens the season to 1-0 overall with the win while Columbia drops to 0-1 overall with the loss. Junior Andrea Lopez scored the only goal of the game.


UP NEXT
The Lady Birds (1-0) will host the Talladega (Ala.) Tornadoes at Lakeshore Park at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 28.
