Roadrunners Get Second Straight Win Versus Life

DALTON, Ga. – Dalton State used strong bench play and converted crucial second chance points in a 98-86 win over Life (Ga.) in non-conference action at Mashburn Arena in Dalton on Saturday afternoon. It was the second straight win over the Running Eagles for the Roadrunners, who defeated Life 83-78 in their last matchup on December 19.

THE FIRST HALF
Five minutes into the game Dalton State held a nine point lead, 14-5, on the back of strong play from Sean Cranney and Sean Chislom. Another Chislom bucket extended the lead to 11 at the 13:37 mark. Life battled back and cut the lead to three with under 10 minutes to go in the half. Dalton State stretched the lead back out to eight after a trey from Randy Bell and a basket from Kingston Frazier, but Life would hang around. Back-to-back three pointers from Tory Ferguson quickly cut the lead to one at 33-32.

The Roadrunners answered back with Bell knocking down another three and Chislom getting another basket in the paint to get the lead back to six with 5:18 left in the half. The Running Eagles turned up the intensity and tied the game at 40-40 with 3:58 on the clock. Bell would answer again with another three pointer to halt the Life momentum. Both teams traded field goals over the next two minutes, but final two minutes belonged to Dalton State. The Roadrunners out-scored the Running Eagles 8-4 as time wound down and carried a 51-47 lead into the break.

THE SECOND HALF
The second half started the same way that the first half ended, with the Roadrunners scoring the rock. Dalton State scored seven of the first nine points to start the period and drew the lead back out to nine at 58-49. A 9-0 run from Life capped by three Connor Gamble free throws once again tied the ballgame. On the ensuing possession, Cranney found D'Anfernee Pugh on the wing to put the run to an end a give the Roadrunners a 61-58 lead.

The Running Eagles once again got some defensive stops and tied the game for the final time at 62-62 with 12:44 remaining in the contest. As the Roadrunners did all afternoon, they answered back. A 10-2 run saw Dalton State take an eight point lead at 72-64. The Roadrunners matched Life field goal for field goal and got some key defensive stops as they extended the lead to 12 with 6:34 to play. Dalton State would get the lead to as much as 13, their largest of the day, with 4:32 left after a Cranney free throw.

Life continued hang around. Seven straight points from Devin Dorsett and Jay Jay Simpson cut the lead down to seven with just over two minutes to go, but Dalton State once again answered the call. Down the stretch the Roadrunners held Life defensively and converted their shots from the charity stripe to pull away with a 98-86 win.
