#3 Roadrunners Advance To The Round Of Eight

Box Score
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - #1-seeded Dalton State punched their ticket to the round of eight with a convincing 79-60 win over #4 Montana Western (Mt.) Friday night at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, MO.

THE FIRST HALF
The score would be tight in the early going with both teams trading the lead. Dalton State would use an 8-0 run capped by a Sayvon Wilson field goal midway through the first half to turn a one point deficit into a seven point advantage at 21-14 with 10:24 remaining until the break. Montana Western would steadily chip away though, and tied the game at 31-31 with 3:49 left until the half on a Kooper Kidgell field goal. The rest of the first half would belong to the Roadrunners as they went on a 9-0 run to take a 40-31 lead at the break.

THE SECOND HALF
Dalton State came out of the half and quickly extended the lead to 12 on a Reed Dungan 3-pointer with 18:23 left on the clock. The Roadrunners would stay in command through out the second half, never letting the Bulldogs get any closer than six points. With 7:43 left, Dalton State held a seven point lead at 61-54. Over the next 5:24, the Roadrunners would hold Montana Western to two points, while scoring 15 of their own to take command of the game. Dalton State would hit their free throws down the stretch en route to the 79-60 victory.

THE REST OF THE STORY
The Roadrunners improve to 29-4 on the season, while Montana Western ends their season at 24-8. Carnilious Simmons led the way for the Roadrunners recording his 16th double-double of the season with 17 points and 19 rebounds. Reed Dungan led all scorers with a game high 19 points, connecting on three 3-pointers and going (6-of-11) from the field. Sayvon Wilson added 16 points and nine boards, while Isaiah Box was the last Roadrunner in double-figures with 11 points and six assists. J'Quayveon Williams had six huge rebounds off the bench along with six points.

One night after going (10-of-12) from the field and (6-of-7) from behind the arc and scoring 32 points, Montana Western guard Dom Robinson could only muster 8 points and (2-of-7) from three. His backcourt mate Shyke Smalls was equally stifled, going (4-of-13) from the field and scoring 12.

The Roadrunners out-rebounded the Bulldogs 52-30, and outscored Montana Western in the paint 50-28. Dalton State added 14 fast break points compared to two for the Bulldogs and converted second-chance opportunities into 17 points.

"I thought the difference in the game was the kids were willing to do what needed to be done to win the game," said Dalton State head coach Tony Ingle. "We ran a 1-3-1 half-court defense the majority of the night. We've maybe ran that defense two minutes total in four years. It was the best defense we needed to win the game."

The Roadrunners will have a date with #3-seed Texas Wesleyan, who took down #2-seed The Master's (Calif.) 77-75, tomorrow, March 18 at 7:30 p.m. (CDT)
