Dalton State Basketball Toppled Hiwassee College, 80-59

Coach Tony Ingle played everyone Saturday afternoon as the Dalton State basketball Roadrunners (8-1, 2-1) knocked off the Hiwassee College Tigers 80-59 at Mashburn Arena in the Northwest Georgia Trade and Convention Center.

A smaller than usual crowd of 821 included a lot of youngsters, many of whom enjoyed a half-time chance to shoot for prizes.

"We were impressed with Hiwassee and how much they have improved since our last meeting," Coach Ingle said. "I feel like WE played really well considering it was final exam week and we only had two days of practice this week."

"We had a great performance from all of our (usual) starters and had good contributions from 'Shaqco' (Ricco) Williams, Jamaine Burrey and Chris Jones," added Ingle. Burrey and Williams started the game as part of the plan to rest the usual starters and to give everyone else much needed game time.

Nine Roadrunners scored. Preston Earle came off the bench to have a game-high 15 points. He also pitched in two rebounds and three assists while playing only 19 minutes and 27 seconds of the 40 minutes game.

Sean Tate (23:38) and Ladaris Green (27:01) also saw limited time, but they scored 13 points each. Green added seven rebounds and hit both three point attempts. Anthony Hilliard had nine points and four rebounds.

Williams scored eight points in only 11 minutes 59 seconds. Jordan Bowling had seven points and five rebounds. Jones scored six. Freshman Clynt Bell, last year's Chattanooga area leading scorer, had a chance to show what he can do. Coming in late, Bell hit both three point attempts to score six.

Hiwassee (1-11) scored the game's first points on a three pointer with Charles Beard.  Williams hit a basket in the paint to allow the Roadrunners to pull to within one.

Hilliard hit a couple of free throws to put DS ahead by one point (4-3). The Tigers regained the lead at 5-4, but Green's three pointer put the Roadrunners up by two. Dalton State never trailed again, going out to a 17 point lead (33-16) with 7:28 left in the first half. The halftime lead was 16 – Dalton State 43, Hiwassee College 27.

The Roadrunners led by as many as 26 points in the second half (69-43 with 6:29 to go and 71-45 at the 5:41 mark), on their way to the 21-point-win. Hiwassee is a member of the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA).

Dalton State out rebounded Hiwassee, 36-32. The Roadrunners also out shot the Tigers from the field, 41 percent (23-56) to 33 percent (18-54). The hosts were 15-22 from the foul line, while Hiwassee connected on all six of their free throws.
