Lady Roadrunners Battle (RV) Tennessee Wesleyan To Scoreless Draw In Season Opener


ATHENS, Tenn. Dalton State women's soccer opened the 2026 season with a hard-earned 0-0 draw against (RV) Tennessee Wesleyan on Thursday at the TWU Athletic Complex in Athens, Tenn.
 
The Lady Roadrunners withstood 14 Lady Bulldog shots behind a seven-save shutout from goalkeeper Maggie Rickerd. Dalton State placed five of its eight attempts on frame, but were unable to break through against TWU goalkeeper Ana Martinez, who finished with five saves.
 
FIRST HALF
Tennessee Wesleyan produced the first attempt of the match in the fifth minute, but Dalton State answered quickly when Brooke Fairchild forced Ana Martinez into a save at 6:01. Maggie Rickerd made her first stop less than three minutes later, denying Valerie Koopman.
 
The Roadrunners created their strongest stretch of first-half pressure between the 18th and 22nd minutes. Alice Legnedahl put an attempt on target at 18:06, while Amy Wearing tested the goalkeeper twice in less than two minutes. Wearing also delivered two corner kicks during the sequence.
 
Tennessee Wesleyan generated several opportunities later in the half, but Rickerd stopped attempts from Rosalie Trigano and Rosie Dunkerton to send the teams into halftime tied at zero. Dalton State finished the opening period with four shots, all four on target, while Rickerd recorded four saves.
 
SECOND HALF
The hosts increased their attacking pressure after the break, but Dalton State's defense continued to keep the match scoreless. Rickerd denied Julia Starchl in the 53rd minute before Martinez stopped Legnedahl's attempt at 66:17.
 
Tennessee Wesleyan came closest to scoring in the 75th minute when Julie Gopal struck the crossbar. The Bulldogs continued to press with a series of shots and corner kicks, but Rickerd saved attempts from Samantha Holsenbeck and Iara Tello, while the Lady Bird defense blocked two additional efforts in the 81st minute.
 
Dalton State still generated late chances of its own. Lexi Lyon had an attempt blocked in the 80th minute, and Carol Anne Giannamore-Strickland earned a corner after her 88th-minute shot was blocked. Legnedahl produced the final attempt of the match, sending a shot wide with five seconds remaining as the teams completed the scoreless draw.
