SSAC Champions! Roadrunners Win SSAC Thriller Over William Carey (Miss.)

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Dalton State outlasted William Carey (Miss.), 90–87, at the Multiplex at Cramton Bowl on Saturday night, powered by 28 points from Qualen Pettus, 24 from Raylan Barrion, and a double-double from Varun Danak. The Roadrunners shot 52.9% from the field, owned a 52–22 edge in paint points, and survived a late push thanks to Jamori McDougald's clutch free throws in the closing seconds. RECAP
FIRST HALF
After a slow start, Dalton State surged behind Pettus and Danak to a 30–23 lead at the 6:55 mark, capped by a Danak layup. William Carey answered with back-to-back threes from Jamar Jenkins to tie it, and the Crusaders took a 40–39 edge into the break on a late Makeem Roberts jumper. Pettus paced the Roadrunners with 14 first-half points, while Barrion added 11; Dalton State shot 45.9% in the period but trailed despite a 20–8 advantage in second-chance points and a 26–10 edge in paint scoring before halftime sequences.

SECOND HALF
Anthony Robinson opened the half with a three, but Briggs and Barrion quickly answered. Barrion's triple at 18:19 knotted it at 44–44, and Miles Ceballos drilled a corner three to give DS the lead, 47–46. The Roadrunners' best stretch came midway through: Barrion's three at 8:31 followed by Tyshan Kelley's dagger at 8:06 pushed the margin to 70–60.

William Carey clawed back with free throws and a Robinson dunk to make it 76–74 with 5:05 left. Down the stretch, Pettus finished through traffic for an 84–80 lead at 1:26, Danak scored on a roll with :29 left for an 86–82 advantage, and McDougald went 4-of-6 at the stripe in the final 18 seconds to keep DS in front despite a Makeem Roberts three with :03 remaining.
