No. 18 Dalton State Stays Perfect with 86–69 Win Over Bryan


DALTON, Ga. – Dalton State men's basketball, ranked No. 18 nationally, extended its unbeaten start to 4–0 with a convincing 86–69 victory over Bryan (Tenn.) on Thursday night at Bandy Gym. The Roadrunners used balanced scoring and a dominant second half to pull away from the Lions, who fell to 0–4 on the season.
 
RECAP
FIRST HALF
The opening 20 minutes featured eight lead changes as both teams traded baskets early. Bryan briefly led 4–2 before Dalton State responded with a 7–0 run sparked by Qualen Pettus' dunk and Kota Benson's mid-range jumper. Jerry Taylor Jr. kept Bryan close with 11 first-half points, but Dalton State's depth began to show late in the period. Varun Danak provided a lift off the bench with six points, and Benson knocked down a three-pointer to help the Roadrunners take a 38–33 lead into halftime. Dalton State shot 44.1% from the field in the first half, while Bryan hit 46.7% but committed 10 turnovers.
 
SECOND HALF
Dalton State seized control after the break, opening the half with a 10–4 spurt capped by a Benson three-pointer. Danak continued his perfect shooting night, scoring 12 second-half points and finishing 8-for-8 from the floor. The Roadrunners' defense tightened, forcing 13 turnovers in the second half and converting them into 31 points off miscues for the game. Bryan's Taylor Jr. battled with 10 second-half points, but Dalton State's bench outscored Bryan's reserves 38–25, and the Roadrunners stretched their lead to as many as 22 points with five minutes remaining. Dalton State shot 51.5% in the second half and hit four threes to seal the win.
