Misic’s Extra-Time Magic Sends #19 Dalton State to SSAC Semifinals

PULASKI, Tenn. — In a dramatic SSAC Tournament Quarterfinal clash, #19-ranked Dalton State edged out UT Southern (Tenn.) 1-0 in overtime, thanks to a last-gasp goal from junior forward Sergej Misic. The Roadrunners now advance to the semifinals in Montgomery, Ala on November 6, continuing their pursuit of the conference crown.

FIRST HALF
The opening 45 minutes were a tense, physical affair with both teams struggling to find rhythm in the final third. Dalton State managed just two shots, both off target from Jesus Huitanda, while Tennessee Southern registered two attempts of their own. The Fire Hawks earned four corner kicks to the Roadrunners' zero, applying pressure but failing to break through a resolute Dalton State defense anchored by goalkeeper Bernardo Manzano. The half also saw tempers flare, with yellow cards issued to Filippo Fregoli (UTS) and Huitanda (DS), setting the tone for a chippy contest.

SECOND HALF
The intensity ramped up in the second half as both teams pushed for a breakthrough. Tennessee Southern dominated possession and outshot Dalton State 11-5, but Manzano stood tall in goal, making two crucial saves. The Roadrunners responded with six corner kicks and a near-goal from Huitanda that rattled the crossbar in the 78th minute.
Discipline issues plagued both sides, culminating in red cards for Matthaus Mayrhofer (TSU) in the 64th minute and Luis Carrasco (DS) in the 69th, reducing each team to ten men. Despite the numerical parity, Dalton State held firm defensively and forced the match into extra time.

OVERTIME
With the match seemingly headed for penalties, Dalton State found their moment of brilliance in the dying seconds of overtime. At 94:56, Sergej Misic latched onto a well-placed ball from David Saldana and Fabio Barbosa, slotting home his 17th goal of the season to seal the 1-0 victory. Manzano's clutch save on Mak Binder earlier in the period preserved the clean sheet and secured the win.
