Birds Blast Knights On Senior Day


DALTON, Ga. – Defense led to offense, and a lot of it for Dalton State as the Birds forced 18 turnovers and blocked 8 shots in a dominating 88-60 win over Middle Georgia State on Senior Day at Bandy Gym on Saturday afternoon.
 
THE FIRST HALF
  • Allon Johnson, Matt Compas, and Ellis Lee accounted for the first buckets of the game as Dalton State jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead within the first 4 minutes of play.
  • Brice Martin brought Middle Georgia back to within 2 points with three straight buckets as the score stood at 8-6 with 14:30 to go in the half.
  • Harrison Eghan and Franklin Almonte got in on the act with three-pointers to make it a 14-8 game at the 12:23 mark.
  • After another Martin field goal, the Birds ripped off a 15-4 run thanks to Donavan Miller, Compas, Eghan, and Almonte to make the score 29-14 leading into the final media timeout of the first half.
  • DS continued to keep their foot on the gas pedal in the final six minutes and carried an 18-point lead (38-20) into halftime.
THE SECOND HALF
  • Miller and Johnson started the second half with three-pointers to increase the lead to 23 points (46-23).
  • Ellis Lee hit a three-pointer with 11:22 to go in the half, then got a steal on the next possession and passed ahead to Carterius Evans for the dunk to get the lead to 29 points (63-34).
  • DS continued to pour it on with a three-ball from Kawasiki Ricks, and slams from Evans and Compas to go up by 34 points (74-40) with 7:06 on the clock.
  • Middle Georgia cut into the lead slightly, but to no avail as Coach Ireland replaced the starters in the final minutes with the Roadrunners cruising down the stretch to a 28-point win.
THE REST OF THE STORY:
Dalton State (Ga.) improves to (15-10 overall, 11-7 SSAC) with the win, while Middle Georgia State falls to (9-15 overall, 5-13 SSAC) with the loss. Five Roadrunners scored in double-figures led by Matt Compas with 18 points and 5 rebounds. Allon Johnson got a start on senior day and made the most of it with 13 points and 8 boards.
 
Ellis Lee started to find his stroke from distance, nailing 3 treys and adding 11 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists. Franklin Almonte matched Lee with 11 points and pulled down 6 rebounds. Donavan Miller just missed a double-double with 10 points and 9 assists.
 
Brice Martin led the Knights with a 19-point, 10-rebound double-double. Pierles Brown was next with 11 points, with Adarius Oliver adding 10 points and 7 rebounds.

BY THE NUMBERS
The Birds shot 54.4% (37-of-68) from the field, had 26 points off turnovers, 21 second-chance points, and 50 of their 88 points in the paint. They also went 11-for-27 from three-point range and out-rebounded MGA 37-30.
 
Defensively, DS held Middle Georgia to 37.1% (23-of-62) from the field for the game, including 7-of-30 in the first half. The largest lead of the game for the Birds was 34 points at the 7:06 mark of the second half.

UP NEXT
The Roadrunners will hit the road for their final two games of the regular season. Their next opponent will be Blue Mountain Christian (Miss.) on Tuesday, January 20. Tip-Off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. (CT) at Tyler Gymnasium.
