Birds Get The Job Done Against Toccoa Falls


DALTON, Ga. – Dalton State struggled at times after the long holiday layoff but still got the job done against a Toccoa Falls team that never went away, getting a 77-69 victory over the Screaming Eagles at Bandy Gym on Monday night.
 
THE FIRST HALF
  • DS looked crisp out of the box jumping out to a 9-1 lead in the first four minutes with Qualen Pettus and Carterius Evans getting baskets.
  • Toccoa Falls woke up but the Birds kept the Screaming Eagles at bay with Antonio Lewis and Matt Compas providing the spark to keep a nine-point lead (15-6) with 12:50 remaining in the period.
  • Randall Robinson went to work for TF and helped cut the Roadrunner lead to four points at 17-13 just shy of the halfway mark.
  • Marc Pilcher hit a trey along with great play from Kevin Henry to re-extend the lead to nine (27-18) with 6:51 until halftime.
  • Dalton State hit a cold point for the next 5 minutes as they were outscored 13-4 which drew Toccoa Falls even at 31-31.
  • Evans and Kawasiki Ricks converted in the final minute to give the Roadrunners a 35-33 lead at the break.
THE SECOND HALF
  • The Birds started the second half with a 7-0 spurt to make the score 42-33 short of three minutes in.
  • The lead for the Roadrunners stayed between six to nine points for much of the half until Pettus nailed a shot from distance to make it an 11-point game (63-52) with 7:31 on the clock.
  • Lewis and Compas helped grow the advantage to 13 points (67-54) at the 5:21 mark.
  • Toccoa Falls continued to battle and slashed their deficit to six points, 69-63, with 1:51 to go, but Dalton State got the stops they needed on the defensive end and held on for the 77-69 win.
THE REST OF THE STORY:
Dalton State (Ga.) improves to (10-2 overall, 5-0 SSAC) with the win, while Toccoa Falls (Ga.) falls to (4-5 overall) with the loss. Qualen Pettus led the Birds and all scoreres with 25 points, six rebounds, and two assists. Matt Compas had a huge 15-point, 14-rebound game that included four assists as well. Antonio Lewis hit three triples and had 12 points and seven rebounds.
 
Jeremiah Williams paced Toccoa Falls with 19 points and nine boards. Will Watson added 15 points and seven rebounds, with Tyrese Freeman accounting for 12 points as the last Screaming Eagle in double-figures.

BY THE NUMBERS
Dalton State didn't dominate the paint, but they hit the glass hard, out-rebounding Toccoa Falls 48-37. Points in the paint were much closer at 34-32 in favor of the Birds. DS really capitalized off 15 TF turnovers with 18 points on the offensive end.
 
Offensive rebounds were big for Dalton State as they brought down 14. Where they had trouble was getting second chance points as they mustered just seven.

The Roadrunners will hit the once for their next matchup and attempt to avenge an early season loss when they take on Tennessee Wesleyan. Tip-Off from Athens, Tenn. is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
