Birds Stay Hot, Extinguish Phoenix

DALTON, Ga. – Cumberland came out of the box like a Phoenix, but Dalton State assumed command at the end of the first half and never trailed again as the Roadrunners claimed a 91-72 win over CU at Bandy Gym in Dalton on Monday night.

THE FIRST HALF
  • An Antonio Lewis three put the Roadrunners up 5-4 just under a minute and a half into the game, but Cumberland answered with an 8-0 run to take a 12-5 lead just over a minute later.
  • DS steadily tried to claw back with buckets from Matt Compas and Kyoya Sasaki as CU continued to hold the lead at 7 points (20-13) with 11:53 on the clock.
  • As Triston Conger three-pointer made the Phoenix lead 8 points (23-15) with 10:06 remaining in the half then a fire erupted in the Roadrunners.
  • A 12-0 run sparked by the defensive play of Kevin Henry and Sasaki put the Birds up 27-23 with 7:44 to go until halftime.
  • Much like Henry, Carterius Evans lit a spark when he entered the game helping man the paint as the lead grew to 10 points (42-32) after another Lewis three-ball with just over a minute to go.
  • In all, Dalton State closed the final 9:35 outscoring Cumberland 31-9 to take a 46-32 lead into the break.
THE SECOND HALF
  • Omarion Smith and Qualen Pettus added to the offensive display, and with Compas and Lewis, helped grow the advantage to 21 points (59-38) just under five minutes into the second period.
  • Soon after, a Compas jumper gave the Roadrunners their biggest lead of the game at 22 points (66-44) with 13:35 left in regulation.
  • Try as they might, the Phoenix could not get the deficit below 17 points doing so for the last time at the 4:28 mark with the score 82-65.
  • Trey Lewis and Marc Pilcher each got late triples with Leroy Ikejiaku providing impressive inside play as the Roadrunners cruised down the stretch to a 91-72 win.
