Lady Birds Catch Fire In Second Half For First Win Of Season


DALTON, GA. – The Lady Roadrunners snagged their first win of the 2023 season Friday evening against the Bryan (Tenn.) Lions at Dalton Stadium. After a scoreless first half, Dalton State caught fire, scoring all the match's tallies after halftime. 
 
 HOW IT HAPPENED
 FIRST HALF 
  • NO SCORING
SECOND HALF 
  • (1-0 DS) DS: Just over five minutes into the second period of play, the Lady Birds capitalized on a free kick that led to Emma Johnson pushing the ball through the bulk of defenders and finding Ria Cox, who cashed in with the 1st goal of the night, and her 1st of the season in the 50'. 
  • (2-0 DS) DS: In the 60', Lauren Wright took advantage of a mistimed Lady Lion goal kick, leaving the goalie as the only barrier of defense before ultimately cashing for the Lady Bird's 2nd score of the contest. 
  • (3-0 DS) DS: Dalton State capped off the night in the 67' following an excellent sequence of passing led by Emma Johnson, locating Lauren Wright, who placed the ball perfectly for Nicole Perez to send it into the back of the net.
THE REST OF THE STORY
Dalton State (Ga.) improves its overall record to (1-1-1 overall) with the victory. At the same time, the Bryan (Tenn.) Lions fell to (0-3-1 overall) following the loss. The Roadrunners played stiff defense all game, leaving the Lady Lions limited room to create scoring opportunities. Brooke Alvarez had another solid outing, saving all 5 shots that were sent her way.
 
UP NEXT
The Dalton State Lady Roadrunners will travel to Decatur, Ga., to take on the Agnes Scott (Ga.) Scotties on September 4. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at Gellerstedt Field.
