Roadrunners Score Big Upset Road Win Over #14 Loyola (La.)


DALTON, Ga. – The Roadrunners got it going from the field in a big way, shooting over 55% from the field and from three-point range as they upset #14 Loyola (La.) on the road with an 84-74 win over the Wolf Pack in an important SSAC matchup at The Den in New Orleans, La. on Thursday night.
 
THE FIRST HALF
  • The game was tight early with Loyola taking an 11-9 lead at the 16:14 mark off a three-pointer from Matthew Mondesir.
  • Dalton State answered back with a 7-4 spurt in a minute and a half stretch to assume the lead (16-15).
  • From there, the Birds reeled off a 10-0 lead to stretch the lead to 26-15 just under the half way mark of the period.
  • Loyola stopped the run with 3-straight points, but the Roadrunners came back with another 12-0 run to hold a 20-point lead (38-18) with a little under 4 minutes left in the first half.
  • Buckets from Jaelin Ferrell and Boubacar Kamissoko ended the half as Dalton State kept their foot on the gas pedal and took a 43-24 lead into the break.
THE SECOND HALF
  • DS built the lead to 22 points (50-28) just shy of 2 minutes into the second half after baskets from Ferrell and Carterius Evans.
  • A three-ball from Kamissoko and a bucket from Franklin Almonte extended the lead to 23 points with 16:52 left in the half.
  • Another jumper from Kamissoko gave the Birds their largest lead of the night at 24 points (68-44) with 11:40 on the clock.
  • A three-pointer from Alex Hammond got the Roadrunner lead under 20 points but Ferrell answered with a three-ball of his own to keep the lead at 20 points (71-51) with 9:31 remaining.
  • Loyola mounted a charge with 7:38 left in regulation that got the lead down to 11 points (77-66) with 5:29 to play, but the Roadrunners matched the Wolf Pack bucket-for-bucket down the stretch to hold on for an 84-74 win.
THE REST OF THE STORY
Dalton State (Ga.) improves to (16-11 overall, 11-8 SSAC) with the win, while #14 Loyola (La.) falls to (20-6 overall, 15-4 SSAC) with the loss. Jaelin Ferrell was on fire from long range, connecting on 6-of-9 shooting from three and logging a team high 20 points.
 
Boubacar Kamissoko scored 17 points with 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Sean Cobb added 15 points and 6 boards, while Donavan Miller dished out 10 assists to go along with 8 points.
 
Jalen Galloway once again led Loyola with 21 points and 7 rebounds. Matthew Mondesir netted 16 points and 6 rebounds in the losing effort for the Wolf Pack, while Michael Harden had 10 points and 8 assists.

BY THE NUMBERS
DS was highly efficient from the field in the win going 34-for-61 (55.7%) overall on the night including 19-for-32 (59.38%) in the first half as they built a 43-24 halftime lead. The Birds finally got it going from three-point range as well as they shot 56.3% (9-for-16) from distance.
 
On the defensive end, the Roadrunners held the Wolf Pack to 37.50% (9-for-24) in the first half and allowed just 1 three-pointer. Overall, Loyola was 4-for-19 (21.1%) shooting from deep.
 
Neither team did a great job taking care of the basketball with 39 combined turnovers (21 for Loyola and 18 for Dalton State), but the Birds did a better job capitalizing on the opposite end as they scored 27 points off turnovers compared to 17 for the Wolf Pack.

UP NEXT
Dalton State will end the regular season on Saturday, February 18 with another crucial road game when they travel to Mobile, Ala. to take on Mobile (Ala.). Tip-Off from Pharr Gymnasium is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. (CT).
