Roadrunners Drop Conference Matchup With William Carey


HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Roadrunners battled back from a large first-half deficit at Clinton Gymnasium in Hattiesburg, Miss. but could not get over the hump as William Carey (Miss.) held on for an 86-83 win over Dalton State, handing the Birds their first SSAC loss of the season on Saturday afternoon.
 
THE FIRST HALF
  • William Carey got off to a hot start, jumping out to a quick 8-0 lead after almost 3 minutes of play.
  • Dalton State got on the board but back-to-back-to-back three-pointers from Kaeden Laws and Earl Smith made it a 13-point lead (17-4) for Carey with 15:21 on the clock.
  • An 8-0 run capped by a Donavan Miller trey for the Birds closed the gap to 5 points (17-12) just under two minutes later.
  • The Crusaders answered with a 6-0 run of their own to pull the lead back out to 11 points (23-12).
  • With 6:48 remaining in the half, the Crusader lead stood at 16 points (35-19) after two Smith free throws.
  • DS got the deficit back to single digits, but 6 unanswered points ended with a Derrick Herrick three to close the half, with William Carey leading 43-30 at the break.
THE SECOND HALF
  • The Roadrunners came out with renewed vigor to begin the second half and peeled off a 9-1 run to cut the lead to 5 points (44-39).
  • Carey continued to hold a 5-10-point lead but increased it back to 14 points (66-52) after a Dylan Brumfield three-ball with 9:49 to play.
  • It would be a 15-point lead (68-53) with 8:05 left before the Birds made a run.
  • Antonio Lewis nabbed a steal and went the length of the court for a bucket that drew a foul with 4:23 on the clock.
  • Lewis hit his free throw that capped a 13-3 run to make the score 71-68 for WC.
  • It would become a 1-point game on two occasions, but Ashton Campbell provided the dagger with 1:11 to go in the form of a three-pointer to make it a 5-point game (79-74).
  • Both teams matched free throws down the stretch as William Carey held on for an 86-83 win.
THE REST OF THE STORY
Dalton State (Ga.) falls to (5-4 overall, 3-1 SSAC) with the loss, while William Carey (Miss.) improves to (6-2 overall, 3-0 SSAC) with the win. Five Roadrunners scored in double-figures, led by Antonio Lewis with 17 points and 4 steals. Franklin Almonte added 13 points and 6 rebounds.
 
Matt Compas had 12 points, with Kawasiki Ricks and Donavan Miller contributing 11 and 10 points, respectively. Miller dished out 5 assists as well.
 
Earl Smith led the Crusaders and all scorers with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Dylan Brumfield had a nice stat line with 16 points, 5 rebounds, and 7 assists, with Ashton Campbell and Ankerion Shows adding 14 and 12 points each. Shows also pulled down 7 boards.

BY THE NUMBERS
Both squads were turnover-prone, with Dalton State committing 16 and William Carey 13. They would lead to 21 and 22 points, respectively, for each team. DS managed to out-rebound WC 43-42 and held a 26-16 advantage in points in the paint. Second-chance points were equal at 15-15.

UP NEXT
The Roadrunners will be back in the friendly confines of Bandy Gym on Monday, December 4, when they play host to Voorhees (S.C.). Tip-Off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
