Birds Erase Double-Digit Deficit, Snag Road Win At Brewton-Parker


MOUNT VERNON, Ga. – The Dalton State Men's Basketball team trailed by double-digits midway through the second half but nailed some key baskets and had some timely defensive stops to motor back for a 69-64 road win over Brewton-Parker (Ga.) at Gillis Gymnasium in Mount Vernon on Monday afternoon.
 
THE FIRST HALF
  • Brewton-Parker jumped out to a 4-0 lead after a bucket and two free throws, but Jaelin Ferrell hit a three to close the gap to 1-point after two minutes of play.
  • Baskets from Sean Cobb and Carterius Evans gave the Roadrunners a short-lived 9-8 lead with 14:44 left in the half.
  • BP quickly re-took the lead and held it until Franklin Almonte hit a jumper for another quick lead for the Birds at 17-16 just short of the midway point of the period.
  • A 5-0 spurt from the Barons in response to the Almonte bucket saw them take the lead for good in the half as they got the lead to 10 points before taking an 8-point lead (40-32) into the half.
THE SECOND HALF
  • The Barons looked to take control of the game as they extended the lead to 10 points, then 13 points (49-36) after a Grant Sanders tip in with 15:22 left in regulation.
  • An and-1 play from Boubacar Kamissoko cut the lead to 10 points before Jaelin Ferrell hit a trey to get the deficit back to single digits at 51-44 with 12:01 on the clock.
  • Kamissoko hit two free throws before Evans reeled off 4-straight baskets to pull the game even at 54-54 with 5:21 remaining.
  • Cobb hit two more buckets, while Donavan Miller and Brad Milliorn got in on the action to help give the Roadrunners a 62-56 lead with 2:46 left to play.
  • Aaron Udell hit a three-pointer to cut the lead back to 3 points, but 5-straight from Jacquez Fountain grew the lead and capped the comeback as the Birds left Mount Vernon with a 69-64 win.
THE REST OF THE STORY
Dalton State (Ga.) improves to (11-7 overall, 6-4 SSAC) with the win, while Brewton-Parker (Ga.) falls to (4-14 overall, 2-8 SSAC) with the loss. Sean Cobb had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Birds in scoring. Carterius Evans led the comeback with three-straight baskets counting towards his 14-point total on the day.
 
Evans went 7-for-7 overall from the field and pulled down 6 boards as well. Donavan Miller and Brad Milliorn were key as each dished 5 assists in the win.
 
Damarcus Johnson Jr. was a menace down low for the Roadrunners all afternoon going for a game-high 23 points and 11 rebounds. Aaron Udell added 17 points, with Jeffrey Huff scoring 10 points as the last Baron in double-digits.

BY THE NUMBERS
Both teams managed to hit just 5 three-pointers each as Dalton State was 5-for-29 (17.1%) and Brewton-Parker went 5-for-13 (38.5%). The Barons managed to outrebound the Roadrunners 41-32 but DS got the better of BP in the paint as they outscored Brewton 40-32.
 
The key factor in the game was the second half where DS outshot BP 51.72% (15-of-29) to 32.14% (9-of-28). The Birds also capitalized off turnovers scoring 18 points compared to 8 for the Barons.

UP NEXT
The Birds start a four-game homestand on Saturday, January 21 when they welcome #19 Faulkner (Ala.) to Dalton. Tip-Off against the Eagles is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at Mashburn Arena.
