Roadrunners Slip Back To .500 In Conference Play With 83-63 Loss To #8 Faulkner


MONTGOMERY, Ala. – #8 Faulkner protected home court and halted a three-game Dalton State winning streak in the process with an 83-63 win over the Roadrunners in SSAC basketball action at Tine Davis Gymnasium in Montgomery, Ala. on Saturday afternoon.
 
THE FIRST HALF
  • The Roadrunners started cold from the field as Faulkner raced out to an early 10-2 lead just over 5 minutes into the contest.
  • Carterius Evans, Boubacar Kamissoko, and Donavan Miller hit buckets to get the Birds back into the game at 16-10 at the midway point of the half.
  • Faulkner began to pull away shortly after with a small 6-0 run to take a 22-10 lead with 6:07 left until halftime.
  • A C.J. Hines bucket with 1:38 remaining made the lead 13 points at 31-18, but Dalton State battled back with scores from Miller, Darien Cone, and Jaelin Ferrell to close the deficit to 9 points (35-26) at the break.
THE SECOND HALF
  • DS stormed out of the gate to open the second half with an 8-1 run capped by a Franklin Almonte hoop to close the gap to 2 points (36-34) two minutes in.
  • The Eagles answered in a big way with a 12-0 run to pull their lead out to 14 points at 48-34 four minutes later.
  • After an exchange of scores, baskets from Hines, and Raygen Edmondson extended the lead to 18 points at 57-39 with 10:51 remaining in the game.
  • The advantage for Faulkner grew to 23 points (71-48) after a Jonathan Garcia three-ball at the 5:51 mark.
  • Twenty-four points was the largest Eagle lead of the day occurring 1:28 on the clock at 81-57 as the Roadrunners could not get back into the game coming away with an 83-63 loss.
THE REST OF THE STORY
Dalton State (Ga.) falls to (7-5 overall, 3-3 SSAC) with the loss, while #8 Faulkner (Ala.) improves to (10-2 overall, 4-2 SSAC) with the win. Jaelin Ferrell once again led the Birds in scoring going 4-of-8 from deep for 13 points. Boubacar Kamissoko and Sean Cobb each had 10 points with Kamissoko pulling down 6 rebounds and Cobb 5.
 
Derek Murphy led four Eagles in double-figures with 24 points and 4 rebounds. Trace Hill scored 19 points with C.J. Hines adding 17 points, 9 rebounds, and 8 assists. Jonathan Garcia was the last Faulkner player in double-digits with 11 points.

BY THE NUMBERS
Notoriously strong on the glass, Faulkner pulled down 42 rebounds to 29 for Dalton State. DS shot 41.8% (23-for-55) from the field overall while the Eagles hit at a 49.2% (30-for-61) clip.
 
The Roadrunners heated up in the second half improving from 37.93% in the first half to 46.15% in the second period. Unfortunately, Faulkner also shot better in the second frame going 58.62% to stretch out the lead down the stretch.
 
Points in the paint shaded to Faulkners' side (30-20) as did points off turnovers (11-3), but the Birds got more production from the bench holding a 15-11 advantage.

UP NEXT
Dalton State will head to sunny South Florida for their next contest when they take part in the SSAC/SUN Challenge in West Palm Beach, Fla. Their first of two games will be against Webber (Fla.) on Friday, December 30. Tip-Off from Massimino Court is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
