#19 Roadrunners Upend #2 Crusaders


DALTON, Ga. – #19 Dalton State scored a major win on Thursday night with a 3-2 2 OT victory over #2 William Carey (Miss.) in Southern States Athletic Conference action at Lakeshore Park.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST HALF
  • (1-0 DS) DS: The ball never hit the ground as a Jared Zauner free kick found Zachary Perry who knocked a header to a wide-open Noah Cicoria to give the Birds a 1-goal lead in the 19'.
  • (1-1 T) WC: Carey tied the score in the 27' when Sacha Vandersteene collected a rebound in front of the net and skirted it through.
 
SECOND HALF
  • (2-1 WC) WC: Pablo Varela Vasquez Fraga received a ball in transition from Reece Harrison and booted with his left past a diving Fraire to give the Crusaders the lead.
  • (2-2 T) DS: Davinson Mera Valencia provided a spark off the bench an fireworks late when he headed through a beautiful free kick from Santiago Moore to tie the match in the 86'.

  • (3-2 DS) DS: A foul in the box on Valencia called for a PK that Moore put in the left 90 for the Golden Goal and the 3-2 victory with just over a minute remaining in the period.
 
 
THE REST OF THE STORY
#19 Dalton State (Ga.) improves to 10-0-1 overall (5-0 SSAC) with the win, while #2 William Carey (Miss.) falls to 7-1 overall (3-1 SSAC) with the loss. Santiago Moore was the top point getter with 3 total (1 goal, 1 assist).
 
Aaron Fraire was solid in goal with 7 saves, while Davinson Mera Valencia put the Roadrunners in position to get the win with a late goal and drawing the foul that setup the winning penalty kick goal.
 
BY THE NUMBERS
DS improves to 6-0-2 all-time in overtime matches at Lakeshore Park. One of the ties was won in penalty kicks (6-5) over Martin Methodist (Tenn.) in the 2017 SSAC Tournament quarterfinal.
 
The Birds outshot the Crusaders 27-20 including 10-7 on frame. Carey took a heavy advantage in overtime, 6-1, but the one shot for DS proved to be the last of the match.

Dalton State will end regular season home matches on Saturday, March 20 when they host #7 Mobile (Ala.). Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
