#7 Eagles Catch Fire From Deep In Second Half To Defeat Roadrunners


DALTON, Ga. – Dalton State held the halftime lead, but visiting- Faulkner caught fire from the outside and pulled away in the second half defeating the Roadrunners 88-76 in the final regular season contest for the Birds at Bandy Gym in Dalton on Tuesday night.
 
THE FIRST HALF
  • It looked to be a repeat of the night before as Faulkner nailed two early 3's to take a 6-0 lead.
  • The Birds got hot from there going on a 20-3 run to take a 20-9 lead at the 12:52 mark.
  • Faulkner answered with a 9-2 spurt to get back to within 4 points (22-18).
  • Dalton State continued to match Faulkner but the Eagles continued to whittle away at the Roadrunner lead, getting it to 1 (33-32) on a Jordan Hamlette trey 3:32 on the clock.
  • With 1:44 remaining in the half, Daniel Garmendia hit 1-of-2 free throws to give the Eagles the lead (36-35).
  • DS responded with hard defense and outscored FU 6-4 in the final minute and a half to take a 41-40 lead into halftime.
 
THE SECOND HALF
  • Aaron Burress hit a bucket at the 16:30 mark to keep DS in front 48-45.
  • Jordan Hamlette drew a foul on an attempt from distance and hit all 3 foul shots to kickstart a barrage of three pointers that would be a 15-3 run and give Faulkner a 60-50 lead.
  • While the Roadrunners hit 2's in trying to keep up, the Eagles hit more 3's taking the 15-3 run and turning it into a 31-8 explosion to put Faulkner up by 20 points (76-56) with 8:44 left to play.
  • Dalton State recovered to outscore Faulkner down the stretch 20-12 but it was the Eagles leaving with an 88-76 win.
 
THE REST OF THE STORY
Dalton State (Ga.) falls to (7-11 overall, 6-7 SSAC) with the loss, while #7 Faulkner (Ala.) improves to (22-2 overall, 13-1 SSAC) with the win. Four Roadrunners scored in double-figures with Marquel Wiggins leading with 21 points and 4 rebounds.
 
Antares Gwyn completed a double-double with 20 points and 11 boards. Aleksandar Pantelic and C.J. Perry hit 6-of-7 Dalton State 3's to add 14 and 13 points respectively.
 
Faulkner matched Dalton State with 4 double-figure scorers. Jordan Hamlette led the way for the Eagles with a career-high 34 points and 7 made 3's. Daniel Garmendia made 4 treys and added 16 points. Garrett Sanderson and C.J. Hines combined for 5 more three pointers and 15 and 10 points respectively.

BY THE NUMBERS
A fairly defensive first half turned into an efficient second half for both teams. Dalton State shot better than the Eagles at 48.39% (15-for-31) compared to 43.8% (10-for-23). In the second half the Eagles hit at a 60.71% clip (17-for-28) and the Roadrunners at 55.56% (15-for-27).
 
The difference was from behind the arc where DS shot 1-of-7 (14.29%) in the second half and FU shot 11-of-18 (61.11%). Both teams hit 6 treys each in the first period.
 
Dalton State held the rebounding edge 27-24. Of the 27, 10 were offensive rebounds that led to 19 second chance points. Faulkner only mustered 3 second chance points as they were kept to just 4 offensive boards.

UP NEXT
The regular season concludes for the Roadrunners after the announcement that their games on Thursday, February 18 and Saturday, February 20 against Middle Georgia were canceled due to COVID related reasons in the Knight program. They will wait until Saturday evening to see their draw in the SSAC Tournament that begins in Montgomery, Ala. on February 24.
