Birds Fall On The Road To UT Southern


PULASKI, Tenn. – Dalton State men's basketball dropped their second game-in-a-row on with a 65-56 defeat at the hands of Tennessee Southern at Curry Life Center in Pulaski, Tenn. on Saturday evening.
 
THE FIRST HALF
  • Both teams struggled to score early as UT Southern held a slim 7-6 lead at the 15:11 mark of the half.
  • A 10-2 run from the FireHawks made the score 17-8 in favor of UTS midway through the half.
  • A Cam Welch trey made it a 10-point lead for Tennessee Southern with 8:15 remaining in the half.
  • A C.J. Perry three cut the lead to 5 at 28-23 with 3:08 to go.
  • Three more three balls by the FireHawks extended the lead and saw them carry a 36-27 lead into the break.
THE SECOND HALF
  • UTS opened the second period with a 7-0 run to take a 16-point lead at 43-27 with just over 16 minutes to play.
  • The Roadrunners answered back with a 14-3 run of their own to cut the deficit to 5 points with 9:10 remaining.
  • The Birds went cold from the field after as Tennessee Southern score 15 of the next 17 points in the game over the next 7 and a quarter minutes to take an 18-point lead at 61-43 with 1:47 on the clock.
  • The buckets started to fall shortly after for the Birds as they furiously stormed back outscoring the FireHawks 13-4 down the stretch but it was too late as UT Southern held on for a 65-56 wn.
THE REST OF THE STORY
Dalton State (Ga.) falls to (6-5 overall) with the loss, while Tennessee Southern improves to (8-3 overall) with the win. C.J. Perry and Antares Gwyn led the Roadrunners with each scoring in double-figures. Perry had a team high 12 points to go along with 4 rebounds and 3 assists. Gwyn posted a 11/6/2 line with 2 steals to boot.
 
Igor Stokic was tough in the paint with 12 rebounds as the only bird with double-digit boards. Half of Stokic's rebounds were on the offensive end.
 
Two Tennessee Southern players scored in double-figures with Tad Sivley leading the FireHawks with 19 points. Brady Brown had a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds, Adarion Hudson dished out 9 dimes.

BY THE NUMBERS
The Birds won the battle on the boards 36-29 and pulled down 17 on the offensive end. The biggest difference in the game was the three-ball where the FireHawks went 11-for-23 (47.8%) and the Roadrunners went 5-for-25 (20%).
 
UT Southern assisted on 19 baskets compared to 10 for Dalton State. From the free throw line, UTS was 10-of-14 (71.4%) and DS was 5-for-14 (35.7%).

The Roadrunners go back to SSAC play on Tuesday, December 14 when they travel to take on Mobile (Ala.). Tip-Off is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. (CT).
