Roadrunners Bounce Back With SSAC Win Over Blue Mountain (Miss.)


DALTON, Ga. – Dalton State moved their record to 6-3 early in the season with a 56-48 win over Blue Mountain (Miss.) in SSAC men's basketball action at Mashburn Arena in Dalton on Saturday afternoon.
 
THE FIRST HALF
  • C.J. Perry started the game off with a made free throw after a bench tech on Blue Mountain opened the game.
  • A bucket from the Toppers soon followed, but Dalton State answered with a 13-2 run to take a 14-4 lead at the 10:08 mark.
  • Blue Mountain could not buy a bucket as the Roadrunners continued to stretch the lead to as many as 20 points at 31-11 with 44 ticks on the clock.
  • Two more buckets ended the half with Dalton State leading 33-14.
THE SECOND HALF
  • BM quickly made a dent in the lead with an 11-2 run to cut the deficit to 9 points at 35-26 with 16:28 left in the half.
  • The Roadrunner drew the lead back out to 14 points at 44-31 with 12:31 on the clock after a Jaelin Ferrell trey.
  • Blue Mountain would not go away and outscored the Birds 15-3 over the next 8 minutes to get within 1-point at 47-46 with a little over 4 minutes to play.
  • Some great defense mixed with some timely baskets saw DS answer with an 9-2 scoring stretch to get the 56-48 win.
THE REST OF THE STORY
Dalton State (Ga.) improves to (6-3 overall, 1-1 SSAC) with the win, while Blue Mountain (Miss.) falls to (4-2 overall, 0-2 SSAC) with the loss. The Roadrunners had four in double-figures led by Jaelin Ferrell with 16 points. Mohammed Abubakar had 12 points and 2 rebounds while C.J. Perry and Rodley Adjei each added 10 points.
 
Adjei added 7 assists and Perry brought down 4 boards. Igor Stokic and Antares were ferocious on the glass pulling down 12 and 9 rebounds respectively.
 
Two Toppers scored in double-digits as Cole McGrath led with 16 points on 4-of-8 shooting from distance. Vatangoe Donzo had 15 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 blocks.

BY THE NUMBERS
Blue Mountain struggled mightily in from the field in first half going 4-for-25 (16%) as Dalton State built a 33-14 halftime lead. The Roadrunners went 5-for-14 (35.7%) from distance while the Toppers went 4-for-22 (18.2%).
 
The rebounding margin went the way of the Birds 37-27. Second chance points were also to the Roadrunners advantage at 14-4.

Dalton State faces a still opponent in their next game as they travel to Portsmouth, Ohio to take on defending National Champion and #6 Shawnee State (Ohio). Tip-Off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. (CT).
