Roadrunners Move To 2-0 With Defeat Of Southeastern Baptist


MARIETTA, Ga. – The Roadrunners raced out to an early lead and cruised down the stretch for an 85-58 victory over Southeastern Baptist (Miss.) in the Life University Classic at the Eagle's Nest in Marietta on Friday evening.
 
THE FIRST HALF
  • DS scored the first 8 points of the game and worked their way up to a 12-point lead (20-8) at the 13:09 mark.
  • The lead increased by 7 points (34-15) after a Jahir Joyner free throw at the 8:54 mark.
  • Dalton State kept the lead in double-digits and made the advantage 20 (44-24) with 2:21 until the half after two Mohammed Abubakar shots from the charity stripe.
  • Abubakar hit a jumper in the lane right before the half to make the score 46-28 Roadrunners at the break.
THE SECOND HALF
  • SBC cut the lead to 15 points before a 6-0 run from the Birds drew the lead back out to 21 points (57-36) at the 15:31 mark.
  • Another run, this one a 7-0 run after an exchange of baskets extended the lead to 28 points (70-42) as the Roadrunners began to put the game out of reach.
  • A Jalen Barker field goal with 3:04 remaining gave the Birds their largest lead of the night at 29 (81-52).
  • They would relax down the stretch and finish off an 85-58 win.
THE REST OF THE STORY
Dalton State (Ga.) improves to (2-0 overall) with the win, while Southeastern Baptist (Miss.) falls to (0-1 overall) with the loss. Mohammed Abubakar led the Roadrunners with 17 points and 4 rebounds. Freshman Franklin Almonte polished off another double-double with 15 points and 14 boards.
 
Three more Roadrunners finished in double-digits with C.J. Perry, Jahir Joyner, and Rodley Adjei adding 14, 13, and 11 points respectively. Perry went 4-of-7 from deep while adding 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Joyner pulled down 5 boards in 19 minutes of work as Adjei dished out 2 dimes to add to his stat line.
 
Brannon Singletary was the only Charger in double-figures with 10 points. Larry Holmes Jr. and Glen Glover Jr. were close with 9 points each.

BY THE NUMBERS
The Roadrunners built a serious first half lead on the back of 54.29% (19-for-35) from the field in the first half while holding Southeastern Baptist to 36.67% (11-for-30). The Chargers also committed 16 turnovers that Dalton State turned into 25 points.
 
DS also doubled up in points in the paint at 50-26 and fast break points, 16-2. Bench points were fairly even at 38-35 in the Birds advantage.
 
Dalton State held the rebounding edge 53-34. Of the 53, 24 were offensive rebounds that led to 17 second chance points. Points off turnovers also favored DS. 25-13.

UP NEXT
The Birds hit the hardwood again tomorrow, October 30, when they take on Thomas (Ga.) in the final day of the Life University Classic. Tip-Off against the Nighthawks is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
