(RV) Roadrunners Open Conference Play With Win Over Brewton-Parker


MOUNT VERNON, Ga. – Three Roadrunners scored in double-figures as Dalton State opened SSAC play with a 71-62 road victory at Brewton-Parker (Ga.). The win at Gillis Gymnasium on Thursday night was the first of the season for the Birds.
 
THE FIRST HALF
  • The Barons pulled out an early 10-5 lead just under three minutes in.
  • DS battled back to grab the lead at 15-13 with a 10-3 three minutes later.
  • BP reassumed the lead (22-19) just past the half way mark of the first period after a Jack Gray 3-ball.
  • The rest of the half featured eight lead changes and two ties with the Roadrunners grabbing a 34-33 lead after a Marquel Wiggins trey with 3:35 left in the half.
  • Antares Gwyn and Aleksandar Pantelic joined Wiggins in nailing free throws to extend the lead to 6 points (39-33) at the half.
 
THE SECOND HALF
  • A.J. Hassell joined the party with 2 threes to help extend the Roadrunner lead to 12 points (49-37) at the 17:16 mark.
  • Brewton-Parker cut into the lead with an 8-0 run to make the score 49-45 with 14:20 to go.
  • Scoring became hard to come by over the next 5+ minutes as the teams combined for five points as the score sat at 53-46 in favor of the Birds with 9:16 remaining.
  • The Roadrunner lead tightened up as BP cut it to 2 points (57-55) with 6:04 left in regulation.
  • DS managed to hold the Barons at bay and began to extend the lead, eventually getting it to 11 points before closing out with the 71-62 win.
 
THE REST OF THE STORY
(RV) Dalton State (Ga.) improves to (1-4 overall, 1-0 SSAC) with the win, while Brewton-Parker (Ga.) falls to (2-7 overall, 0-1 SSAC) with the loss. Marquel Wiggins led the Roadrunners with 18 points and 4 rebounds on 7-of-11 shooting from the floor.
 
A.J. Hassell and C.J. Perry combined to go 7-for-12 from behind the arc and joined Wiggins in double-figures with 15 and 14 points respectively. Igor Stokic came off the bench to add 7 points and 7 boards.
 
Benjamin Ross led the Barons with 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting, while Jack Gray supported with 16 points. Ross added 7 rebounds to his stat line and Gray dished out four assists.

BY THE NUMBERS
The Roadrunners were once again efficient from the field shooting at a 46% (23-for-50) clip, while holding the Barons to 38.2% (21-for-55) from the field. Bench points (18-9) and second chance points (10-9) favored the Roadrunners.
 
Dalton State turned the Barons over 23 times and scored 23 points off turnovers. In contrast, the Birds turned it over 19 times, but held BP to just 10 points off turnovers. Brewton-Parker was slightly better from the charity stripe at 78.6 % (11-for-14) compared to 76.2% (16-for-21) for the Birds.

UP NEXT
(RV) Dalton State and Brewton-Parker will tussle again on Saturday when the two squad's matchup in Dalton. Tipoff at Bandy Gym is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
