Unbeaten Streak Now At Six With 1-0 Win Over Johnson

DALTON, Ga. – (RV) Dalton State pushed their unbeaten streak to six games with a 1-0 victory over Johnson (Fla.) on Thursday night in non-conference action at Lakeshore Park Soccer Complex.

THE FIRST HALF
In a familiar trend, the Roadrunners came out pressing and looking for an early goal. It began in the 5' with a Zachary Perry attempt off a corner kick from Santiago Moore, but Lucas Basilio came up with the save.

More shots came Basilio's was from Amin Saheb Ettabaa, Kevin Villatoro, and Frank Herrera with none getting to the back of the net. Johnson managed to get two shots in on Aaron Fraire in the first half, with chances by Alexandre Rodrigues and David Mendoza being stopped.

Dalton State got their best chance right before the half when Moore setup for a free kick right outside the 18. His shot split the wall and hit the left post. It had enough momentum to ricochet and ride the goal line all the way to the right post before being kicked up by a Johnson player and into the arms of Basilio. With the opportunity missed, the squads went into halftime tied at 0-0.

THE SECOND HALF
A defensive struggle began the second half with neither team being able to advance the ball to the goal. DS got a crack with a Moore shot that was saved in the 54'. A few minutes later, the Roadrunners received a set of corner kicks, but could not capitalize on the opportunity.

Finally, in the 70' Dalton State broke through. A nice shot by Tom Bentham was saved by Basilio, but he failed to corral the ball. The rebound went to Richy Volny who put it past Basilio and celebrated with a round off, back tuck for the 1-0 lead.

The Roadrunners attempted to extend the lead, while playing excellent defense. Jared Zauner, Fredrik Ackander, and Noah Thomas each had looks at goal only to have their shots saved by Basilio. The strong defensive effort proved to be enough as Dalton State moved their unbeaten streak to six matches with a 1-0 win.

THE REST OF THE STORY
Dalton State (Ga.) improves to (5-1-1 overall) with the win, while Johnson (Fla.) drops to (2-1 overall) with the loss. Richy Volny collected the only goal of the evening in the 70' off a rebound. Nine Roadrunners collected shots on goal led by Kevin Villatoro with two. Freshman netminder Aaron Fraire had a quiet night in goal recording two saves and another clean sheet.

Alexandre Rodrigues and David Mendoza collected shots on goal for the Suns, while Lucas Basilio notched nine saves and allowed the only goal of the match.

DS outshot the Suns (15-2) overall and on goal (10-2). Both of the Suns shots on goal came in the first half with the last occurring in the 31'. Wilfred Gineris collected a red card in the 64' forcing the Suns to play with 10 men the final 26 minutes of the match.
