Lady Roadrunners Fall In Season Opener

DALTON, Ga. – The Dalton State Women's Soccer team got the 2019 season underway on Wednesday evening, but it wasn't the result they were looking for as (RV) Tennessee Wesleyan defeated the Lady Roadrunners 4-0 at Lakeshore Park Soccer Complex.

THE FIRST HALF
It didn't take long for the Lady Bulldogs to get going as Chloe Rootes got the scoring started with a goal in the 4' off an assists from Laura De La Torre Seoane. Dalton State got their first crack in the 7' when Andrea Lopez got a shot on goal, but Lady Bulldog goalkeeper Lauren Teal stopped the attempt.

TWU went back on the attack and maintained consistent possession of the ball, striking again in the 19' when Rootes broke free again on a lead pass from Julia Ruiz Vargas. Rootes had another opportunity six minutes later on a PK, but her attempt went wide.

Ruiz Vargas joined the scoring line in the 33' when she received a ball from Hannah Dearing and found the back of the net to give the Lady Bulldogs a 3-0 lead. The Lady Roadrunners tightened up on the defensive end the rest of the half, nixing the chances for another goal as Tennessee Wesleyan held the 3-0 at the half.

THE SECOND HALF
The Lady Bulldogs got on the board again early in the second period when Cynthia Venzor knocked in a free kick off the boot of Jessica Young for a 4-0 lead. Chances for the Lady Roadrunners to cut into the lead were few and far between as the TWU defense was swarming the ball.

Freshman Mattie Dollar continued to play tough in net, stopping the remaining shots the Lady Bulldogs sent her way. In the end, the Lady Birds struggled to mount an attack against the tough Wesleyan defense and the Lady Bulldogs held on for a 4-0 win.

THE REST OF THE STORY
Dalton State falls to (0-1) on the season, while (RV) Tennessee Wesleyan improves to (1-1). The Lady Bulldogs held the advantage in shots (13-3) and shots on goal (9-1). Freshman Mattie Dollar, playing her first collegiate match, recorded five saves in net. Andrea Lopez got the only shot on goal, while Alyssa Bilbrey and Keyle Snyder got opportunities.

UP NEXT
