Men's Basketball Finishes Final Regular Season Road Swing With Win

MOUNT VERNON, Ga. – Dalton State got their 18th win of the season with a 93-78 road victory over Brewton-Parker (Ga.) in SSAC play at Gillis Gymnasium in Mount Vernon on Saturday afternoon.

THE FIRST HALF
The Barons were the ones with the quick start, getting out to a 10-4 lead after the first 4:45 of play. Brewton-Parker continued to hold a six-point lead at 15-6 after a Michal Volley bucket with 13:29 to play in the first half.

The Roadrunners countered with a 9-2 run to take an 18-17 lead with 10:40 on the clock. Both teams traded buckets, and with 7:20 remaining. Dalton State held a three-point lead, 28-25. The squads then went on a cold streak where they went a combined 0-6 over the next two minutes of play. The Barons broke the icy spell with a field goal at the 5:06 mark to close the gap to one, 28-27.

Dalton State began to heat up soon after and countered with a 10-2 run to take a 38-29 lead with 3:23 to go. Great offensive play allowed the Roadrunners to grow the lead to 11 points, 44-33, going into the half.

THE SECOND HALF
The game turned into a heavyweight bout in the second half. It began with a shot from distance from Malik Pugh. Michael Volley came back with a three of his own. Elijah Staley had two buckets in the stretch, with Volley answering with one. After 2:25 had expired in the half, Dalton State held a 51-38 lead.

The Barons got hot from the field and began connecting on more shots from behind the arc. With 13:25 remaining in the game, they had the lead down to seven points at 59-52. The strong play of Luke Luna helped the Roadrunners answer the Brewton-Parker run. He had six of the next eight points for the Birds as they stretched the advantage out to 14 points at 67-53.

In the final 10 minutes, Dalton State matched or countered Brewton-Parker at every pass. The Roadrunners never allowed the lead to get below double-digits, even with the Barons nailing three pointers. In the end, it was all DS as they pulled away for the 93-78 win.

THE REST OF THE STORY
Dalton State improves to (18-10 overall, 13-7 SSAC) with the win, while Brewton-Parker (Ga.) drops to (2-24, 1-17 SSAC) with the loss. Only three Roadrunners scored in double-figures, but a few more came close. Senior Elijah Staley led the way with 24 points and seven rebounds.

Luke Luna came off the bench for 20 points in just nine minutes of play. Luna was a perfect 10-of-10 from the field in the win. Sean Chislom was the last Roadrunner in double-figures with 13 points, and narrowly missed the double-double with nine boards.

Three Barons score in double-figures led by Michael Volley with 19 points and seven assists. Justin Syphoe added 16 points, while Isaiah Hicks also had 16 points. Volley, Syphoe, and Hicks combined to hit 10 of the 12 three pointers hit by Brewton-Parker.
