Roadrunners Move To 4-0 With Win Over Shawnee State


CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky.  – The Dalton State Men's Basketball team finished the SSAC/Mid South Challenge with two victories over the weekend. The second of which came at the expense of Shawnee State (Ohio) as the Roadrunners defeated the Bears 74-63 at Powell Athletic Center in Campbellsville, Ky. on Saturday.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
THE FIRST HALF
  • Dalton State started the game on a 16-4 run that was capped by a C.J. Perry trey with 14:38 remaining in the half.
  • Shawnee State found a groove and began to whittle down the lead, getting it to five at 20-15 at the 10:46 mark.
  • The Roadrunners continued to hold a single-digit lead until 4:27 left in the half when a De'Andre Price three-ball gave the Bears the lead at 31-30.
  • Buckets were traded and the lead changed hands three more times in the final minutes.
  • The last time was on an Igor Stokic shot from behind the arc to close the half as the Roadrunners carried a 41-40 lead into the break.
 
THE SECOND HALF
  • The second half started much like the first half ended, with both teams swapping the lead.
  • DS gained a four-point advantage at 51-47 with 14:46 on the clock, but it quickly deteriorated as Shawnee State tied it up at 53-53 a little less than two minutes later.
  • The Birds gained the lead for good with 11:46 left to play after a Kevon Tucker layup in the paint.
  • In the remaining time, Dalton State drew the lead out reaching a double-digit advantage with just over a minute left as the Roadrunners got the win, 74-63.
 
THE REST OF THE STORY
Dalton State (Ga.) improves to (4-0 overall) on the season with the win, while Shawnee State (Ohio) falls to (5-2 overall) with the loss. Sophomore Igor Stokic led the Birds with a monstrous double-double of 22 points and 15 boards on 9-of-17 shooting from the floor.
 
Kevon Tucker backed him up with 16 points and four rebounds. C.J. Perry added nine points, going 3-of-3 from behind the arc, while Sean Cranney put up a solid stat line of eight points, six rebounds and five assists.
 
The Roadrunners crashed the boards racking up 50 rebounds on the day and holding the Bears to 29. Shawnee State held the edge in points in the paint (28-14), points off turnovers (21-16), and bench points (28-13), but DS nipped SS in second chance points (17-15) and three's going 9-of-24 (37.5%) from behind the arc. In comparison, the Roadrunners held the Bears to just 17.6% (3-of-17) from deep.
 
UP NEXT
Dalton State will hit the court a little closer to home on Friday, November 15 when they play Morris (S.C.) as part of the Life University Classic in Marietta. Tip-Off is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
