Roadrunners Make Homecoming Successful With Win Over Mobile

DALTON, Ga. - Dalton State built a big first half lead thanks in part to tremendous offensive efficiency and staved off a late Mobile run to defeat the Rams 81-73 on Homecoming 2019 at Mashburn Arena on Saturday afternoon.

THE FIRST HALF
Mobile got the first points of the game on a Tony-Toni Wright bucket in the paint. Dalton State quickly tied it up with an Aaron Burress basket. Another basket from Sean Chislom gave Dalton State an early 4-2 lead. Mobile would tie it up with two free-throws, but the Roadrunners got the lead back after a Malik Pugh trey. From there Dalton State started to draw the lead out.

Two-straight Burress buckets made the score 11-6 and forced a Mobile TO. The Rams got two field goals out of the timeout, but it would be the last they would have for a stretch of seven minutes. During the Ram cold spell, the Roadrunners built an 18-point lead on the heels of Pugh. He hit two more three pointers and a nifty layup to give Dalton State a 28-10 lead.

A 10-0 run from the Rams followed as they trimmed the lead to eight at 28-20 with 7:23 left in the half. Great offensive play saw the Roadrunners keep the lead in double-digits. Baskets Pugh and Sean Cranney extended the lead to 13 points, 41-28. The teams traded buckets as the clocked ticked off with Dalton State taking a 46-33 lead into halftime.

THE SECOND HALF

Two Chislom buckets got the Roadrunners going in the second half as Dalton State extended the lead to 16 points, 49-33. The Rams tried to get back in the game, but the Roadrunners answered the Mobile threats. Timothy Green got in on the action with five points mid-way through the second half as Dalton State held a 64-51 lead with 10:04 left to play.

Eventually, the Rams started to make some headway. A Gabriel Cruz three-ball with 9:20 left cut the lead to 10, 66-56. Will Stanford and Wright combined for two more buckets to cut the lead to six points with 8:05 to go. Not to be deterred, Dalton State battled back. Four points from Cranney got the lead back to eight at 70-62. Two Bell free throws put the lead up to 10 with 4:57 remaining.

Mobile again got the lead down to six with 1:48 left to play after another Wright basket in the paint. It would not be enough as Dalton State converted from the line down the stretch and held on for an 81-73 win.

THE REST OF THE STORY
Dalton State improves to (12-9 overall, 7-6 SSAC) with the win, while Mobile (Ala.) drops to (7-11 overall, 4-9 SSAC) with the loss.
