DALTON, Ga. - The 2018 edition of the SSAC/Mid South Challenge tips off tonight at Mashburn Arena in Dalton. #15 Dalton State and (RV) Faulkner (Ala.) from the Southern States Athletic Conference will be welcoming Mid South Conference members #8 Pikeville (Ky.) and #16 Cumberlands (Ky.) to town for one of the best NAIA basketball weekends this season.

THE TEAMS

DALTON STATE (Ga.)
Record: 1-1

The Roadrunners come into the contest on the heels of an 85-51 win over Selma (Ala.) on October 27. They have had plenty of rest and practice time and are ready for the matchups. Senior Sean Chislom leads the team in points and rebounds per game, averaging 16 and 7.5 respectively. Junior Sean Cranney took on a bigger role in the Selma game, recording a double-double with 11 points and 11 assists. Look for him to distribute the ball evenly around the court and nail the open shot when needed.

Don't sleep on D'Anfernee Pugh, Kingston Frazier, and Randy Bell. Each one complement Cranney in the backcourt with the skill that they bring. Pugh and Bell can score from anywhere on the court, while Fraziers' court vision is next to spectacular.

Down low look out for Elijah Staley and Luke Luna. They provide the size and toughness the Roadrunners are going to need down the stretch this season. Both are rounding in to form and will be havoc in the paint for opponents this season.

FAULKNER (Ala.)
Record: 2-0

The Eagles come into the weekend with two wins in two games. 6-6 junior Milan Skundric is one to watch out for. Last time out he paced Faulkner with 21 points and 18 rebounds and was named SSAC Player of the Week for his efforts.

In the backcourt, CJ Jones is as good as they come. In the season opener against Point (Ga.), Jones poured in 30 points on 11-18 from the field. The Eagles like to shoot the three ball. They are fifth in the county in three-pointers attempted. If they hit them, they will be hard to beat.

PIKEVILLE (Ky.)
Record: 5-0

UPike comes to Dalton with an unblemished record at 5-0 overall. The Bears like to move the ball from inside out starting with senior Jayvian Delacruz. The 6-5 guard/forward from Brooklyn, N.Y. can do it all, ranking in the top-10 nationally in four categories. He leads UPike in scoring at 24.8 per game and leads the country in total points with 149.

Pikeville has out rebounded their opponents by an average of 18.7 per game. They do it effectively as a team with no one person excelling more than the other. So far this season they have had a different player lead the team in rebounding in game.

Chase Parsley is the catalyst for the Bears. The 5-10 guard from Kermit, W.V. sets the offense and distributes the rock at a rate of 4.5 assists per game. If you can pressure him, the game is up for grabs.

CUMBERLANDS (Ky.)
Record: 4-0

All Roadrunner fans should be familiar with University of the Cumberland's after last seasons thriller the two teams played in the first round of the NAIA Tournament. This team is fairly new as only three members of last seasons squad return. Returning though are Malik Colvin-Seldon and Anthony Eaves.

Eaves gave the Roadrunners fits with his long distance shooting in the first half of their game last season. To start the year, he has been off going 6-24 through the Patriots first four games. Colvin-Seldon on the other hand is right on mark to match his 13.4 ppg from last season, averaging 13.3 thus far in the young season. He also leads the team in assist with 2.5 per game.

The Patriots always hit the glass hard and this season is no exception. They are #12 in the country in total rebounds with 169, and average of 42.3 per contest. If they out rebound you, they will beat you.
