#15 Roadrunners Drop Close Game To #16 Cumberlands (Ky.)

DALTON, Ga. - The 2018 SSAC/Mid-South Challenge has come and gone. #15 Dalton State ended the two-day challenge between two of the best basketball conferences in the NAIA with an 82-80 loss to #16 Cumberlands (Ky.) at Mashburn Arena on Saturday evening.

THE FIRST HALF
The Roadrunners got off to a good start with eight quick points from Elijah Staley. Cumberlands would battle back and take the lead, 9-8, after a Jordan Griggs jumper. A 7-0 from Dalton State capped off with a Randy Bell steal on an inbound and subsequent layup would see the Roadrunners build the lead to six with 13:35 left in the half.

Dalton State would steadily draw the lead out even more and got it to nine with 7:14 remaining after a Ty Pendley three. The lead would eventually get to 12 at 32-20 with 5:43 left after five straight points from Aaron Burress.

The next three minutes though would belong to the Patriots. They would reel off an 11-0 run of their own to cut the lead to one at 32-31 with under three minutes to go in the half. The Birds would get back to work and out score the Patriots 10-3 over the final two minutes of the half and carry a 42-34 lead into the halftime break.

THE SECOND HALF
The lead would be maintained by the Roadrunners for the first part of the first half. Cumberlands would continually try to chip away, but the Roadrunners would collect the big buckets when they needed them.

The Patriots would cut the lead to three after an Anthony Eaves three with 14:32 remaining. Staley would foul out with 13:19 left. The ensuing free throws by Eaves cut the lead to one. From there, the Roadrunners would continue to hold a slim lead, but Cumberlands would finally grab the lead at 64-62 with 9:47 left after a Chance Edwards three.

The Cumberlands lead would grow to six points at 70-64 with 6:33 on the clock, but Dalton State would battle back. The Roadrunners would get the lead back with 2:30 remaining after a clutch shot from Sean Chislom. The lead would get to two for Dalton State at 80-78 with 25 seconds remaining. After a timeout, Cumberlands would inbound the ball and settle for a deep three from Anthony Eaves. Miraculously he would hit to take the lead at 81-80.

Dalton State would take the inbound and settle for the final shot. Randy Bell would drive and draw contact, but no foul would be called. The ball would roll on the rim but off the opposite side. Chislom was there looking to clean up and put it back, but another no call from the referees on contact would put Cumberlands in possession of the ball. Jordan Griggs would go to the line with 1.1 on the clock. He would hit the first and intentionally miss the second giving the Roadrunners no time to mount an attack as the Patriots held on for the 82-80 win.
