Simmons Has Historic Night In Roadrunner Victory

DALTON, Ga. – Dalton State continued to improved their record to 11-1 overall, 3-1 in the SSAC with a victory over Martin Methodist College (Tenn.) on Thursday night at Mashburn Arena.

 

THE FIRST HALF

Dalton State opened with an early run on Martin Methodist with a good 3-pointer by Isaiah Box to put the Roadrunners up by 10 points at 16-6 with 14:07 left. Two good shots from the free throw line by Conner Peach would go on to close the gap for the Red Hawks to 6-points at 22-16 with 9:20 left. The Red Hawks continued to press for a reversal, but were unable to pass the Roadrunner's stride as they ended the half with a 13-point lead at 47-34.

 

THE SECOND HALF

The Roadrunners opened the second half with two good field goals by Carnilious Simmons to increase their lead to 17 points at 51-34 with 18:46 left. The Red Hawks would answer with an 8-0 run over the next minute to close the gap to 9 points at 51-42 with 17:38 left. The game would continue to be competitive, but through steady gains the Roadrunners would go on to finish the game with a 23-point lead and defeat the Red Hawks 92-69.

 

THE REST OF THE STORY

Carnilious Simmons made Thursday a night for the record books as he led the Roadrunners to victory with incredible numbers. The Junior from Atlanta, Ga., claimed the Dalton State College school record for points scored in a game with an outstanding 37 points. Simmons also contributed 19 rebounds, and claims 2nd place in the record books for rebounds in a game behind Ladaris Green with 20 rebounds. Mike Harden went a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line and scored 16 points. Reed Dungan rounded out the Roadrunner players in double digits with 11 points.

 

The Red Hawks were led the by the strong performance of Broderick Davis with an impressive 10-12 from the free throw line and 19 points scored. Albert Lynch and Caleb Chowbay each went on to contribute 12 and 10 points respectively. Martin Methodist (Tenn.) drops to a 7-7 overall record, 2-3 in the SSAC, with the loss.

 

Dalton State marches on with a home game against Bethel University this Saturday at 4:00 p.m. in Mashburn Arena.
