DALTON, Ga. - The Dalton State volleyball team rebounded from a loss on Friday to beat Middle Georgia State 3-1 on Saturday in Southern States Athletic Conference play at Bandy Gymnasium.
The Roadrunners improve to 5-10 overall and 4-6 in the SSAC. The Lady Roadrunners out-hit the Knights .221-.036 over the four sets, and had 73 digs to Middle Georgia's 57. The Knights also helped the Roadrunners by committing 28 errors.
The Roadrunners got off to a sluggish start and would go on to lose the first set 25-20. The rest of the match was a different story. The second set started with both teams trading blows. With the score tied at 8, Dalton State would rip off a 9-2 run to take the lead 17-10. They would go on to win the set 25-17.Â
Set three would see Dalton State break open a 12 all tie with a 6-0 run to take a 18-12 lead. It was all the Lady Roadrunners would need as they would win the set 25-19. Middle Georgia made set four close early at 6-5, but Dalton State would steadily increase their lead throughout and cruise to a 25-15 win.
Dalton State was led on offense by Junior
Anna Metzler. Metzler recorded a double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs, while adding 2 service aces. Sophomore
Julia Borges and Junior
Grace Hardin added 10 and 9 kills, respectively.
The offense was directed in the first set by
Casey Cox. The Junior from Oklahoma City, OK would tally 9 assist before handing duties over to
Clarissa Weber and
Brooke Thomas. Weber would total 18 assist, while Thomas would add 15 of her own.
Senior libero,
Karly Newman would lead the defensive charge with 22 digs.Â
Rafaella Petrunko would come off the bench to add 10 digs.
The Roadrunners return to action on Tuesday, October 4, when they face-off against the Running Eagles of Life University at 7:00 p.m. in Bandy Gymnasium.
ON THE HORIZON
After three straight home conference matches, the Lady Roadrunners will step out of conference and take on Life University on Tuesday October 4. Dalton State will be looking to avenge a September 13 road loss to Life. Next Saturday will see Dalton State hold an exhibition match against Gulf Coast Community College. Coach Langner has scheduled this match for a second straight year as a way to get extra work in and get ready for the home stretch of the season.
A LOOK AT THE OPPONENT
Life comes into the game on Tuesday 10-9 overall, and riding a 4 match winning streak. The Running Eagles are led offensively by Janaya Simmons who averages 3.3 kills and 2.92 digs per set, but they can score from anywhere on the court. Life features three girls, Sam Diebold, Chelsea Hill, and Gaby Ferran who all average more than 2 kills per set. Nohema Garcia-Torres is a deadly accurate setter who averages 7.76 assist per set.Â
