Lady Roadrunners Win a Thriller In 5

Box Score

In what was certainly one of the most exciting and competitive matches of the year, the Dalton State women's volleyball team defeated visiting Loyola University at Coach "O" Court on Friday night (25-17, 25-20, 22-25, 22-25, 15-12).  With the win, the Lady Roadrunners move their conference record to 6-4 (10-7 overall) while the Wolfpack dropped to 4-8 (9-13 overall) in Southern States Athletic Conference play.

The match started off well for the Lady Roadrunners as they swept the first two sets and seemed to be well on their way to a victory behind the play of Anna Metzler, Kianna Delaney and Anna Dykes.  However, the Wolfpack did not stop fighting and they won the next two sets behind some excellent serving and the power of Eva Allen who ended the night with 16 kills.

In the final and deciding set, both teams were evenly exchanging points until two pivotal blocks swung momentum the way of the Lady Roadrunners.  Savannah Nelson rejected two spike attempts by Allen which resulted in a change of energy, confidence and ultimately led Dalton State to victory.

"We really played well in the first two sets," said head coach Bruna Langner after the match.  "I think we got complacent in the next two sets and Loyola took advantage by really playing well and building confidence.  However,  I am proud that we came back to win in five," she added.  "After Savannah's block, I think we got our swagger back.  We have to turn around tomorrow and try to get the weekend conference sweep against an excellent Mobile team."

For the Lady Roadrunners, Anna Metzler had 15 kills to go along with 13 digs.  Kianna Delaney and Alyne Bianchi were both in double digits in kills.  Tori Pierce, Michala Askew and Karly Newman also were instrumental on the defensive end with double digit digs.  Askew, coming off her conference player of the week award, recorded 45 assists.  The team recorded an impressive 15 blocks to Loyola's 7.
