Roadrunners Win at Bryan College, 68-60
Dayton, Tn. - The leg weary Dalton State basketball team stayed on the road for a Saturday afternoon win at Bryan College, 68-60.
The Roadrunners led by eight at the half, 38-30, before building a 16 point second half lead at 52-36. Dalton State also led by 16 at 60-44.
The Lions were able to cut the lead in half by the final buzzer. Dalton State's final field goal of the game was with 4:10 remaining.
Galen Smith was impressive off of the bench for DS. He scored 15 points including four of five from the foul line. "Galen was fantastic and really shot the ball well," Dalton State Coach Tony Ingle said after the game. "He provided a much needed spark off of the bench."
Demetrice Jacobs had 14 points and seven rebounds. Preston Earle scored 13. Sean Tate scored 11 with four of five from the foul line.
The Roadrunners improved on their free throw shooting again, making 17 of 23 attempts for 73.9%. That compared to the Lions 18 of 26 (69.2%). Nathan Terry started the game and pulled down 11 rebounds, but the Birds were out rebounded 43 to 30. Ingle was impressed with Terry's performance. "He really played well today and just might have secured a starting position."
"We were not as sharp with our execution, but playing four games in five days in three different states was like playing an NBA schedule," Ingle said. "I was proud of the old Roadrunner fighting spirit. Heck! I even believe Coach Ottinger would have been proud of them today. Right now our kids need a little time to relax and to catch up with their academics."
Brandon Cole led Bryan College (0-4) with 24 points and 17 rebounds. Jeff Long added 18 points.
Dalton State (5-1) returns home for a Wednesday night game at the Trade Center. Tip-Off against Carver College of Atlanta will be at 7:00 p.m. Tickets for the second home game of the season are available at the Trade Center box office.
Wednesday's game will also be broadcast live on Mix 104.5 FM.
The Roadrunners even play next Friday and Saturday at home. Coach Ingle says his players are not the only ones in need of some home time. "I brought my A game today, Advil, because of these bus rides, benches, and hotel beds," Ingle joked (I think).
"Coach (John) Redman asked if I was going to listen to some fast music to get me fired up for the game and I told him no," Ingle added. "When he asked me why not, I said, 'I love music but I'm too tired to pat my foot'. He replied, 'well, you can still hum'."
