Roadrunners Are On A Roll

Central, SC – Ricky Sears hit a shot at the buzzer Tuesday night at Tysinger Gymnasium on the campus of Southern Wesleyan University to give the Dalton State Roadrunners their third win in as many games, this time in overtime, 97-95.

The Roadrunners had been down by seven at the half, 46-39. They outscored the Warriors in the second half to tie the game at 81 at the end of regulation.

After gaining an 80-74 lead on Nathan Terry's only basket of the night, Dalton was outscored seven to one in the final 68 seconds of regulation. With DS up by three points,81-78, Terrance Hutchins of SWU connected on a three-pointer with nine seconds left to send the game into overtime.

Sean Tate hit a couple of clutch free throws in OT to give the Roadrunners a 95-93 lead. SWU's Kenny Holmes was fouled on a three-point attempt and hit two of three from the foul line to tie the game at 95 with only five seconds remaining.

Dalton State rushed down the court for the winning shot by Sears. The game had been tied 11 times and the lead changed 15 times in an exciting contest.

Tuesday night's game was the first of the season in which the Roadrunner out rebounded their opponents. Dalton pulled down 45 rebounds (28 on offense and 17 on defense) to 41 for the Patriots (15 on offense and 26 on defense).

"I was amazed at how we fought hard all night and kept our composure in some tight situations," said Dalton coach Tony Ingle. "Sean finished the game with a bandage around his head and a bloody nose."

"Our kids are tough and we are very fragile inside," Ingle added. "We overcame a lot of adversity on both ends of the court."

Dalton State had five players in double figures. Demetrice Jacobs had a double-double. D.J. scored 22 points and added a dozen rebounds. Preston Earle scored 20 points and had six rebounds.

Sears came off the bench again to score 18 points with eight rebounds. Tate scored 14 points including six of six from the foul line. Anthony Hilliard scored 14 points and had four rebounds. Raheem Mosley had seven points and seven rebounds.

Southern Wesleyan's Terrance Hutchins had a game-high 28 points. Cameron Soloman and Kenny Holmes each added 17 points.

The Roadrunners had 17 turnovers compared to 22 for the Patriots. DS hit 38 of 84 field goals (40.5%) including 8 of 13 from three-point range. SWU was 55.4% from the floor (36/65). Dalton hit 64% from the foul line (16/25), while Southern Wesleyan made 62.1% (18/29).

Finally... A Home Game!

Hiwassee College (1-3) from Madisonville, TN will be our guest for the first ever Dalton State College basketball game in the Northwest Georgia Trade and Convention Center..The game will be broadcast on Mix 104.5 FM with Randal Davidson doing the play-by-play. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. The gates will open at 5:30 p.m.

The visiting Tigers come off of a 93-77 Monday night loss to Tennessee Wesleyan. TWC shot 69% from the floor in the Monday night game including 10 of 17 from 3-point range.

The Roadrunners travel to Athens, TN. Friday night for a 6:00 p.m. game at Tennessee Wesleyan. They stay on the road for a 2:00 p.m. Saturday game against Bryan College in Dayton, TN. Note the game time on the game in Dayton. It has been moved from an original time of 4:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon's game will be broadcast live on WBLJ, AM 1230.

The Birds will come back home for three games next week at the Trade Center. They host Carver College at 7:00 p.m. next Wednesday (11/13/13). They then host the Roadrunner Basketball Club Tournament at the Trade Center. The Roadrunners will face Morris College at 8:00 p.m. on Friday (11/15/13), and Voorhees College of South Carolina for a 4:00 p.m. game on Saturday (11/16/13).
