Roadrunners Reach The Century Mark
The new Dalton State basketball team jumped out to a 28-3 lead in the first 7:42 of the game and never looked back on their way to the team's first time past the century mark.
A reported crowd of 1,327 saw the Friday night game at the Northwest Georgia Trade and Convention Center.
The Roadrunners led 59-35 at the half. They then went on to outgun Morris College by 41 points, 104-63. Dalton Coach
Tony Ingle played all 12 and 11 scored. The DS bench outscored the Hornet subs, 41-18.
"I'm real proud of our team," said Ingle.
"We needed that," he added. "We haven't had that kind of shooting. When you hit eight of ten three-point-attempts in the first half, that's phenomenal. Then we fed off of that."
Morris College (1-6) chipped away in the early second half to pull to within 15 (64-48) at the 15:18 mark. "We got in a little lull," said Ingle.
Demetrice Jacobs led Dalton scorers with 18 points. He also had 15 rebounds.
Ricky Sears followed with 17 points. He connected on three of four from outside the circle, all in the first half. In addition, he shot 4 for 5 from the foul line.
"We got to the gym early and worked on it, and it was falling tonight," Sears said of the team's offensive production.
Preston Earle and
Nathan Terry each scored 11 points;
Anthony Hilliard,
Dylan Smith and Raheem Mosley each scored nine;
Sean Tate scored six and was 4/4 from the foul line; Caz Cole also scored six; and Desmond Phillips and
Galen Smith added four points each.
It was a night in which the Roadrunners out rebounded their opponents 61-37 and they hit 19 of 29 free throws for 65.5% compared to just 34.8% for the Hornets.
In the opening game of the Roadrunner Basketball Club Founders" Classic, Cumberland University from Lebanon, TN led at the half over Voorhees 27-21.
The Tigers, who fell to 4-2 on the season, scored the first 13 points of the second half to take a 34-27 lead. Cumberland (3-0) turned it around to win 61-55.
Saturday games in the Classic begin with Cumberland College and Morris College at 2:00 p.m. Dalton State (7-1) will play Voorhees College 30 minutes after conclusion of the first game, probably between 4:00 and 4:30 p.m. The Dalton State and Voorhees game will be broadcast live on WBLJ - 1230 AM.
