Lady Birds Battle Back but Fall to Mobile (Ala.), 3-1


DALTON, Ga. – Brooke Fairchild scored in the 75th minute to pull Dalton State within one, but Mobile answered with a late insurance goal to defeat the Roadrunners 3-1 on Sept. 13 at Dalton Stadium.
 
FIRST HALF
The teams played a scoreless opening half despite combining for 17 shots. Mobile held an 11-6 advantage in attempts, but Dalton State goalkeeper Maggie Rickerd made five saves to keep the visitors off the scoreboard.
 
Dalton State generated the first shot of the match in the sixth minute when an attempt by Alice Legnedahl was blocked. Marissa Gonzalez followed with a shot that went wide in the 11th minute, and Audrey Hunt had another attempt blocked at the 22:32 mark.
 
Mobile increased the pressure as the half progressed, earning three corner kicks and forcing Rickerd to make saves against Ellie Cowan, Alissa Johnson, Charlotte Malamaire, Nettie Cantey and Ariana Taylor.
 
The Roadrunners nearly broke through shortly before halftime when Gonzalez placed a shot on goal in the 44th minute, but Mobile goalkeeper Olivia Conway made the save to send the match into the break scoreless.
 
SECOND HALF
Dalton State opened the second half on the attack, with Legnedahl forcing a save from Conway at the 49:25 mark. Mobile responded moments later with two goals in a span of 27 seconds, as Andi Hughes scored at 51:06 and Cowan followed at 51:33 to give the visitors a 2-0 advantage.
 
The Roadrunners continued to push forward. Chaney Paulino had a shot blocked in the 59th minute, and Fairchild put an attempt on target at 71:06 that was stopped by Conway.
 
Fairchild made the next opportunity count, scoring at 74:54 off an assist from Ragneidur Ottosdottir to trim Mobile's lead to 2-1. The goal was Dalton State's fourth and final shot on target of the match.
 
Mobile restored its two-goal advantage at 81:05 when Skylar Bennett scored to produce the final 3-1 margin. Dalton State earned its lone corner kick in the closing minute, but the Roadrunners were unable to generate another goal.
