Lady Birds Blank Point (Ga.)


DALTON, Ga. – Dalton State got on the scoreboard early and poured it on late as the Lady Roadrunners clinched the #5-seed in the upcoming SSAC Tournament with a 5-0 win over Point (Ga.) at Dalton Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
 
 HOW IT HAPPENED
 FIRST HALF 
  • (1-0 DS) DS: Emma Johnson caught a rebounded ball off a try on a corner kick and knocked it home in the 8' for a quick 1-goal lead.
  • (2-0 DS) DS: Just before the half, Guadalupe Martinez cut down field and passed off to Lauren Wright who made a short move to her right and fired a ball from 15 yards out past a diving goalkeeper in the 45' to give the Lady Birds a 2-0 lead at the break.
SECOND HALF 
  • (3-0 DS) DS: Ava Vandoren got her powerful leg on ball that rebounded off a goalie save for the third goal of the day in the 56'.
  • (4-0 DS) DS: Wright lit up the scoreboard again in the 74' when she emerged from a scrum with the ball and hit the nylon.
  • (5-0 DS) DS: Issela Briceno got in on the action in the 80' when a pretty corner kick from Briana Hurtado sailed right to Briceno, who headed it in for the final score of the day.
THE REST OF THE STORY
Dalton State (Ga.) improves their record to (8-5-1 overall, 5-4 SSAC) with the win, as Point (Ga.) drops to (1-12-4 overall, 0-8-2 SSAC) with the loss. It was an offensive onslaught from the Lady Birds as they outshot the Lady Skyhawks 32-0 overall and 13-0 on goal. Lauren Wright picked up two goals and was close on another that would've given her the hat trick. She now assumes the team lead with 6 goals on the season.
 
Ava Vandoren collected her 5th goal, Emma Johnson snagged her 3rd, and Issela Briceno her 2nd. Guadalupe Martinez and Briana Hurtado each get their 2nd assist of the year.
 
UP NEXT
DS will cap the regular season on the road when they travel to Blue Mountain, Miss. to take on Blue Mountain Christian (Miss.) on Saturday, October 28. Kick-Off is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. (CT).
